  • Plan B bluefish

I had last Friday off from work and was eagerly anticipating a run down to the ESVA to drum fish. But as Friday got closer, the wind forecast got worse and worse. By the time Thursday night rolled around it was clear that drum fishing was not going to happen. So it was time for Plan "B", as in Bluefish.

There have been reports for a couple weeks now of snappers and mid-20" fish in the OC inlet area while a few bigger fish were also being reported, but not a ton. I had a hunch that there might be some bigger ones away from the inlet though, and based on past experiences, I knew they liked the flats. So I decided to try a little further away from where most of the reports had people catching blues. I launched a couple hours before sunrise to fish for stripers under some of the light shadows before heading onto the bluefish search. But to my surprise all the stripers were gone and had been replaced by 16" - 22" blues. They were everywhere in the shadows and kept me very busy until first light. But smaller blues weren't what I was after.

Once night gave way to morning, I switched over to the heavier gear and started aggressively working 6" poppers across the flats as I drifted with the breeze. Pretty soon I found what I was looking for - big, ravenous, mouths of teeth that wanted nothing better to do then to try and destroy my popper. With the aerial displays and tail walks they put on each time I hooked one, I had totally forgotten that they were " Plan B" for the day. 25" - 37" blues slamming topwater is pretty hard to beat.

Eventually, the breeze picked up to the point where it was time to seek more sheltered waters. So I headed west and hit the bay to prospect for specks. I couldn't fish all the spots I wanted too, but I covered some good areas of early growth grass beds. It wasn't a great bite, and there wasn't much for size, but I did pickup my first 3 specks of the year to 15". A lot of dink stripers rounded out the fishing for the day.

Come Saturday evening I just had to get back out to look for blues. So I made a quick, last minute run out the last hour of light to sling topwater again. I didn't do quite as well as the day before, but still coaxed 3 to commit and lost another 2 mid-fight. After sunset, I checked out the shadow edges again and it was filthy with blues 20" and under. You could of caught a limit in less than 15 minutes probably had you wanted to. Feisty little things too. I had several unexpectedly jump right into my lap long before I was thinking of trying to land them. That mouth of teeth dropping in your lap unexpectedly will get you sliding back in your seat quick! I pulled one 24" striper from the middle of all the snappers before calling it a night.

Yes, that's a great report -- strategy, lures and tactics. You covered them well. Plus you had excellent catches.

Outstanding! I need to figure out how to do that stuff down in the OBX.

Love the line to lure paperclip. I think that's what I see anyway.

Thanks to a great conversation with Slobber Bob on Friday, Jman and I decided to make a last minute trip to OC on Saturday. Our day was a long one, woke up at 1am and I got back to my house at 6:15 pm, but the fishing was phenomenal. We launched around 6am the spot where SB had advised us to go, and the fishing was a little slow for the first hour or so then really picked up. Around 8am it's as if someone flipped a switch, and a whole new size class of bluefish moved in. We each started catching fish from 27" up to 34", and ended the day around noon, each of us having caught our 10/person limit with a mix of 16-25" and 25-30"+ fish to take home. We also released a good amount of fish throughout the day. All of our fish were caught trolling small jigheads with 4-5" paddletails. I also caught a nice 22" striper trolling the same lure spread, and the biggest CNR I've ever caught (which was a good test of the new Mojo Bass rod).

I intend to eat the blues a few different ways. Jman made a nice smoked fish dip which I intend to duplicate, as well as my usual smoked fish recipe (usually placed on cream cheese on crackers or bagels, sometimes with pickled onions). I also want to try a bluefish poke recipe that Big Mike sent me, and the usual fried bluefish tacos/sandwiches. This was definitely one of the best fishing days I've ever had on the kayak, and medium-jumbo bluefish might be my favorite fish to target. They breach, tail walk, take long screaming runs that remind you of a CNR, and are very easy to process/fillet. They're kind of like toothy tarpon, with some of the craziest eyes in the sea.

Sorta like a paperclip, haha. It's a TA clip. There are a whole variety of clip designs out there nowadays for fast lure changes. The TA is just the one I like.

Great reports, thanks for sharing. I’ve been meaning to get down there for blues the past couple years, but this is always a busy time of year for me. I have caught blues that size in the surf, they are a blast.

Thanks again for the advice, it’s a great community of kayak fisherman here! We really had a blast fishing for those big blues (and smoking them)!

Great reports all around! Good to see someone's catching some stuff. I've been putting in too many hours at work to even get out, but I'm hoping to spend some time on Middle River Saturday. Need to stay close to home for now, or else I'd be hitting OCMD or Henelopen pier for some of that blue and flounder action!

Update to the report. I when out yesterday with Minh and, although we picked up some scattered smaller fish throughout the day, I couldn't find any of the bigger fish (25"+). I spent a good amount of time on the flats casting topwater and sub-surface lures or trolling specifically looking for the bigger ones too. But they just weren't there. Tide and conditions were good too, so I should have coaxed a few if they were cruising around. It could have just been one of those day.

But the 18" - 24" fish are still there with nighttime around the lights really being best.
