Fished Nans Cove launch on the Pax for the first time. First trip since last August so I suffered from the obligatory forgotten items/lack of preparedness. Brought my dad with me to make it special. I was impressed by the amount of wildlife present at this location. Birds, turtles, baitfish, spawning carp, SAV were all present in abundance. The fishing was tough. Fished the worst part of day between noon and 330. Caught 5 perch and a small striper on a 1/8oz beetle spin with a white 2” grub. Not too many perch bumps that would lead me to believe they were on the shorelines in abundance. I think they were there but more off the shore in the mid depths or nearer the oyster bar. Plenty of bait and fish splashing. Maybe another week or two and they will be on the shore in full force. The sun became shaded by the clouds for 10-15 minutes and I switched to a 3” paddle tail rigged on the spin blade. I had the feeling that larger fish were present. A few casts later I hooked a (keeper sized) striper that I got to the surface before the hook pulled. At the end of the day while sitting in a relaxed position enjoying some shade I had a 2 foot snakehead swim slowly right next to the kayak. At that point in the day I considered jumping in after him. I switched to a fluke and tried many different retrieves but couldn’t coax a bite. My father missed another sure striper when a small school started briefly busting bait on the surface.
Overall I would definitely use the launch again. The fish are there I just couldn’t unlock the pattern. Close to the launch was thick with SAV but once out of the inlet into the river the bottom was mostly clear. Next time I’ll get them.
