I didn't have much time so I fished from the wall at Quiet Waters park. I bought some small 1" Gulp alive bait and the small Croakers wouldn't stay off them. I switched to a Gulp twisty tail (home made) and got a giant perch up to the top of the wall before he fell off.
He was a citation size fish for sure! I was using a spinner and a 1/4 oz round jig. Everything was chartreuse color.
I rigged my long range bait caster with a top bottom rig and a 11/2 in sinker (wind was coming up) with the Gulp and on the first cast I got a 22 inch channel cat. I am now reminded to put a fish glove in my tackle box (each yak already has one) as I had to wrap my handkerchief around my hand to pull that guy up!
I gave him to a grandfather/granddaughter team who weren't having much luck catching Sunday dinner.
My next cast on the bait caster was with 3 inch Gulp shad. Something latched on to it and away it started to run. This was the most unusual catch that I have ever made in my almost 70 years. It was a female Diamondback Terrapin! It has been around for a while as the shell was about 10 inches and it had ages of algae on it. This girl had that hook and didn't want to open its mouth.
I have caught ( and ate) some huge loggerhead snappers so she didn't intimidate me too much. I was surprised how much she could open that mouth when she wanted to thought. After I got my hook, which did not pierce her mouth, I gently sent her on her way.
I was reminded of why I don't fish on weekends anymore though. This area is too dang crowded. If the weather holds, I am headed out to either Home Port Farm or Jonas Green on Tuesday morning with my new Gulp bait. ( I wonder if I should throw the 3 year old stuff away.
