^ i'd agree, a 7' m or mh fast action, 10lb braid, and a 2500/3500 series reel is really all you need to start catching fish.

I agree with what's been said already but make sure you know a few good knots. Clinch, Palomar and uni to uni will suffice in the beginning.

Oh Mercy. I was just starting to feel confident until the knots got brought into it. Thanks for the heads up. I reckon I should get to YouTubing now. LOL!

          Nicole,

A belated welcome to the forum. You're getting lots of good advice here.

The topic can certainly seem overwhelming. Yes, even knots can make a difference in your success on the water.

I know you're from Southern MD but if you're inclined, you may want to travel north to Anne Arundel County on Saturday, 28 September. John Veil and I will be teaching our third class on Kayak Fishing at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, MD. We cover every topic that has been raised in this thread and more, even knots. We bring kayaks and ancillary gear into the classroom to show you first-hand what we use. We teach a simplified approach to the sport in a conversational style with the students. We also teach you how to read the water so you'll know where to cast or troll with your highest chances of success and how to target specific species. Add to the above important discussions on safety and I think we give students a well-rounded approach to kayak fishing. You'll leave with a good understanding of how to enjoy the sport to its fullest. You'll also receive excellent course handouts and contact information to refer to in the future.

When registration information for the September course is available from the college we'll post it on Snaggedline. That should be fairly soon.

But again, welcome to the forum. Your questions here have been good and indicate you are truly interested in learning as much as you can about kayak fishing.

Mark thank you for this information. I would love to attend a class like that. My work schedule can be crazy sometimes so depending on my shift at that point and my ability to get to Arnold I will do my best to attend. Thank you for the welcome as well. I am extremely grateful for the responses I have gotten here all of which have helped me tremendously.
