  • Hungry Homeport perch

I decided to get in a short trip this morning not too far from home. I launched at Homeport Farms about 8:30. I trolled to the mouth of the creek and back and forth in the river for an hour catching one 12” striper. During the second hour I stayed in Church Creek and cast to several shaded shorelines with a Bignose spinner with the hook barb pinched down. The perch were active in short stretches of shoreline -- finding the productive stretches was the key. During that hour I caught 30 perch. I stayed out for a third hour working farther upstream. The water clarity got worse, the water level was dropping, and the shaded areas were shrinking. I managed only 15 perch in that last hour. Overall, catching 45 perch from 4” to 11.5” was my best perch outing this year so far. All fish were released to swim again.

Stu (Bignose) had sent me a red and white prototype spinner that I used for several trips to catch many perch. At the end of last Friday's outing, the hook broke off at the bend. Over the weekend I replaced it with a brand new Bignose spinner in chartreuse. In any case, the perch were very interested in that new spinner today.

Thanks for the updated report, John. Good to see some reports of people catching fish.

I lost a nearly new gold blade beetle-spin in Winchester Pond yesterday, but I did land a NICE 26" channel cat, saved the skunk.

It was a bigger 1/2oz and I worked the rocky shoreline from Jonas to the 50 Bridge, no perch to be found.

I'd planned to take some Stu Spinners (I picked up from him when you guys were vendors at the Crofton Show?) but apparently i've hidden them somewhere good!
