  • Can’t Top Point Lookout 8/28

Ron and I decided to hit PLO to try for Spanish Mackerel that are hanging around Cornfield Harbor. I got there right at 6 when they open, paid my launch fee and on the water at 6:15. Went out the inlet and immediately had schools of breaking fish, nice quality 17-18” fish with occasional 20” in the mix. By the time Ron showed up at 7:30 for the tide change I had easily boated 20 stripers never getting more than 100 yards from the jetties. Vast majority were topwater and I was playing around with jigging metal which worked just as well just to change it up.

We headed off to some offshore rock piles looking for macks, all we got was a workout. Ron headed to the point, I went back to the inlet. Both of us were tearing them up nonstop for hours, the fish never left and they hit top water all day long. Perhaps slightly better fish at the point but 3’ waves versus glass at the inlet.

We could see Mack’s jumping in the breakers and blues obliged on our jigs and metal. Ron took a short break and bottom fished and got a nice Black Sea bass. It really seemed like we hit the Garden Of Eden this morning.

I threw this black and yellow topwater which the fish loved and most importantly the birds ignored. At one point I had a wind knot on a cast and a damn needle fish latched onto the knot in the line and I had to pry him loose. Really glad I didn’t hookup on the top on that cast.

At one point another kayak showed up. He was bottom fishing for perch and refused to try for the stripers as I pulled them in almost every cast. That’s a degree of discipline I lack.

Guessing a minimum of 50 topwater fish, probably closer to 75.

Great work Mike. Days like this one help us to forget the less productive ones.

I am wore out...had the coordinates programmed in my Hook2 for rock piles and even though fish were breaking, I had a plan to try...love the precise picture of the rock piles...about a four or five foot profile off the bottom...one pile had a few fish, but the second pile had a nice cluster of fish...deep jigging with our sting silver jig was non productive, so Big Mike headed back to the area near the mouth of Lake Conoy while I headed for my next coordinate to a rock pile near the lighthouse. On the way I picked up an eight inch Bluefish trolling on a small Tony pet spoon. The Point was stupid rough...you had to be a dope to go out in it in a kayak...yep, I went out. Fish love rough water. And the first thing I saw was a Spanish Mackerel jumping as my trolled spoon went down...16 inch striper...18 inch striper, 22 inch striper...you get the idea..a Wellcraft 18 foot center console with two fishermen joined me after watching me catch a dozen or so fish...got to check the watertight integrity of all my hatch gaskets today...lots of submarine action with three foot cresting chop on top of swells. It was breezy from the NE once you got out from the point towards the sandbar...as the tide slowed the surf subsided a lot, never calm but a lot less chop. Mike called over the radio telling me the top water bite was on again and quality fish...problem was I was consistently landing legal keeper 19-23 inch Stripers (released everything) even though it was less comfortable than the calm waters Mike was in, so we mostly fished apart today, but stayed in radio contact.

Wow, how big was that sea bass? I've never caught one of those.

Too small...Black Sea Bass have got to be 12.5 inches for a keeper...caught a bunch of undersized bottom fish on crab and bottom sweeper jig at one of my GPS coordinates.Wanted to see if there were any sheepshead in the Bay..caught a baby Spade fish on shrimp...that was a cool looking fish...needed a break from cranking in Stripers...it was my best ever “catching day”...and it never stopped...usually the bite is hot then abruptly just shuts off...not yesterday...and they were not “dink’s”...good quality, hard-fighting, healthy fish. Like there is no problem with the species (there is)...I made a pledge early on this year-no killing any striper...every Striper I have landed in 2019 has been released unharmed.

Wow congratulations guys on a killer day! When the day's option is catch legal fish in one spot or catch legal fish in another spot you know you're having a good one. Very to cool to hear about the seabass! Those fish can be really beautiful with the black and purple shades. It's quite the unique fishery you have down there...seems like you never know what you'll catch! Well done!

Talking about our fishery in Southern Maryland- Just think about this fact- 29 miles due east of Point Lookout directly across the Bay is Crisfield, MD. The species of fish caught at Crisfield are pretty much the same as we get at Point Lookout...just more traffic and lot more fishing pressure here than there...
