  • Slower Lower- goodbye August

Friday was our last fishing day of August...Mike, Gary and I could not agree on a launch as we all had strong opinions so no SMOG crew...Whenican (John) agreed to join me and we launched late morning at dead low tide...slow until the tide started moving. We picked up an occasional striper here and there, but no big numbers...they were all quality fish, though and fought good. As the tide picked up to high so did the fishing..we tried our hand flounder fishing...fun times! I caught eight, Biggest was 15.5 inches..John beat me with a slightly longer 15.65” flounder...Big Mike reported he caught two legal 20 inch fish...Gary was focused on perching...white perch are great table fish...all in all, we all had very enjoyable successful day.

    Ron,
I, for one, am glad August is done! Fishing up north has been spotty. Am hoping it picks up in September with cooler waters. What we really need is a tropical storm to mix up the waters and dissolve this “Dead Zone”! Good luck this fall!

A little turn west and Dorian may oblige you, John.

Nothing serious, just enough to churn up the water

I always caution folks to be careful what they wish for; might just get it...Dorian just topped 175 cat 5 hitting the Bahama Islands...NWS is saying Friday winds of 33 gusting to 45...

In my defense I had afternoon obligations that prevented me from fishing later in the day when Ron went out. We’ve been finding some very high quality fish on top water early in the day and tight to the banks out of Clark’s Landing. No one area better than others, just have to work spots that look fishy and eventually you’ll get paid off. Nothing beats the boil of a large fish inhaling a top water.

Here’s hoping Dorian turns back out to sea, no one needs the destruction it can bring.

Trust me John, I hope Dorian heads northeast out to sea.

I have a trip scheduled to Virginia's Piankatank River this coming Friday through Sunday.
