  • Tangier Classic Tournament

Well sitting here in the captains meeting with my 14 year old son. Were going to fish the Kayak division and looks like it will be a good weekend. Will keep you updated on how it goes. Anyone else going to be out there?

Well was a great tournament had fun fishing with my 14 year old who fish the Kayak division. There were a lot of Kayaks out front on Friday so we went south to Virginia Saturday and found plenty of keeper size trout and short stripers. Next year will be fun since this was the first year for the Tangier Classic and it was top notch thanks to the hard work put in by Adam Corey and his team.

And yes my boy beat me in the ranking... Hope to see everyone there next year.

Nice to meet you Rudy! Very jealous of the fishery in your backyard!! Hope to back that way soon for some fishing and oystering. I can't wait for next year either.

I heard from others it was a good tournament too. I'm bummed I couldn't fish it. Especially with the nice weather you had for it.

I fished this tournament as well and encourage others to do so in future years. It was well run and supported a great local cause. The fishing was solid too, with a lot of 18-20 inch stripers and specks. Saw a bull red but couldn't get it to go for what I was throwing at that time.

I’m signed up. Was a great event last year and it’s right in my backyard. Hope to see a good show of kayakers this year. Adam does a great job.

Tangier Classic is a premier Chesapeake Bay light tackle fishing tournament located in Crisfiled, Md. Anglers will compete 2 out of 3 days across 3 divisions (Boat, Kayak, Kids). Whether you fish from a boat or kayak, please join us while we celebrate the abundant fishing opportunities of the Tangier Sound and raise money for Franklin Kirwan! Learn more about our beneficiary below!

                      2020 Beneficiary:

This year we have chosen 6-year old Franklin Kirwan from Hebron as our 2020 beneficiary. Once we heard Franklin’s story, there was no doubt in our minds; he was the one who should receive our donation. Unfortunately, Frank has been diagnosed with a condition called Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1). NF1 causes tumors to grow all over his body meaning Frank will have to endure chemo once a week for the next year. With a compromised immune system due to the chemo, this last few months has been particularly stressful for their family. His mother, Amanda, is a single mother of 3 young children between the ages of 3 and 11. Due to treatments, she’s only able to work 2-3 days a week. The funds we raise from The Tangier Classic Fishing Tournament will help relieve some of the financial burden and stress caused by weekly travel expenses, medical expenses, parking expenses, and time off work. Below you can read more about Franklin and his story; please consider sponsoring The Tangier Classic to help this young man and his family!

                      Meet Franklin...
“My son, Franklin Kirwan, is a 6-year old boy who attends 1st grade at Northwestern Elementary School. He has recently been diagnosed with multiple brain tumors, as well as tumors on his stomach and side. In August 2019, Frank went for a routine eye exam where they found some concerning signs. It was decided he should be sent to Johns Hopkins University for further testing. In September 2019, after many tests, he was diagnosed with a genetic condition called Neurofibromatosis Type 1. This condition will cause tumors to grow all over his body, inside and out, for the rest of his life.

In November 2019, Frank underwent a brain MRI and PET scan, which showed he had multiple Neurofibromas on his brain, as well as another type of tumor called a Glioma. The Glioma is very fastgrowing, and it’s severely affecting his eyesight due to its location on his Optic Nerve Pathway. Unfortunately, this has caused Frank to become legally blind and means he could lose his vision. The doctors at Johns Hopkins decided Frank needed to have weekly chemotherapy treatments for a year, in hopes of preventing the tumors from getting larger, therefore reducing the risk of him losing his eyesight.

In December 2019, he had surgery to have the port a cath placed in his chest. His first chemo treatment was in January 2020; he has to have several needle pokes in his arms and port to receive his treatments. He will also need to continue with multiple eye exams and MRIs. All of this has caused him to have severe anxiety about going to his appointments. Since Frank has started his chemo treatments, he has not been able to do the typical 6-year old boy things. Frank recently had to stop going to school because he doesn’t have the energy to make it through the day, and his immune system is too low. As a result, he is missing out on being able to interact with all of his friends at school. Frank is your typical boy and loves being outside. He enjoys fishing, hunting, and riding his motorcycle and jeep. He loves police officers and firefighters and has recently been “sworn in for the day” to several local law enforcement agencies. When he grows up, he wants to serve the community as a police officer! We’re looking forward to being a part of this year’s Tangier Classic, and are thankful to be chosen as the beneficiary!”

It was another successful year for the tournament with a great turnout, big payout (over $22K in total), and fabulous weather all 3 days.

I fished day 1 in VA and day 3 in MD. Hardly any wind either day and the water was like glass at times. It just felt good to fish for 2 full days again it's been so long since I've been able to do it. The catching was good and steady too. For me it was all specks, stripers, and lizardfish. I caught just enough to be close to placing, but couldn't quite push it over the top to qualify. I could have used that one more bigger striper and speck that eluded me to upgrade my stringer length. My stringer was 2 striper and 3 specks for about 107.5".

Observations from my 2 days of fishing. In MD I was catching more keeper sized striper, but smaller specks. While in VA, I caught better specks, and only 1 keeper sized striper. For me the specks were clearly keyed in on lighter colors (clear salt and pepper or an albino bluish salt and pepper). All but one of my keeper sized stripers came on topwater, and trolling produced nothing but little rat stripers. For specks I did better casting for them in VA than trolling, while in MD I caught more trolling than casting.

Thanks to the Tangier Classic Committee for putting on a great event that supported an even greater cause in benefiting a young kid in the community that needed help!

I concur with Slobber Bob. The Tangier Classic, in only its second year, is a well run tournament for a good cause. I participated again this year, though did so from a small powerboat because my teenage daughter also wanted to fish. Fishing from the powerboat did not change my tactics too much, as we focused on the same spots in Virginia that I fished during last year's tournament from my kayak.

I fished Saturday and Sunday. Saturday was a bit breezy and the thunderstorm that rolled through in the morning seemed to turn off the early bite. We had perfect conditions on Sunday.

In all, our boat's 5-fish stringer included one striper, one slot-sized redfish, and three specs, for a total of 109.25. Not quite enough to place, but a great time nonetheless.

I too found success on lighter colored lures. When the bite slowed, I switched to a popping cork tipped with gulp, and that seemed to do the trick.

Nice looking fish. I'm glad to see that boat still has some fishing mojo left in it.

It certainly does, John. It will take a long time for your mojo to wear off.
