  • 2 good trips

Over the past 3 weeks I've gotten out to fish twice, once in the mainstem of the Bay around Thomas Point, and once in an upper bay tributary creek. Both times have yielded double digit fish (usually striper), and this is pointing to a successful fall.

The first trip I made out around the South River/BT/Thomas Point, and covered 25 miles total trolling for spanish mackerel. Unfortunately yet again I couldn't find them, though I did troll up a bunch of striper, a few nice ones too, and a nice surprise bluefish. Dozens of powerboats were gathering by the lighthouse and the shoal, and only a few of them seemed to be catching anything (mostly tiny fish), so I considered myself lucky.

The second trip with Matt also produced a fair amount of fish but at much fatter sizes, hopefully this trend will continue. Almost all of my fish have been caught in 10-15 ft of water, on baits that don't troll below 5'. Small paddletails on 1/4 oz jigs have been productive, so much so that when I stop to change tactics and try a little jigging, I get bored so fast that I stop after about 5 minutes. I know that trolling will produce, so I just fall back on that. I've yet to dial in my topwater skills, but I did pick up a few lures that make a lot less surface disturbance than my WP or plain poppers. Matt's a beast with topwater lures, so I'll have to stick with him next time I want to give it a shot, and see what I'm doing wrong. I bet it's more of a patience thing probably, again, I fall back to trolling since it's been so successful.

I've had similar experiences the past few weeks. I am starting a new job at the end of the month, so I'm using my remaining vacation days to fish. Top water has been hit or miss, but I've had success trolling paddletails and crankbaits each trip. The fish seem to be getting fatter too, which bodes well for the rest of the month. Now all we need is the wind to calm down a bit.

Good news guys. Things do seem to be picking up this fall.

Windfinder forecast does not look good for the near future...I usually fish at least once every week...for the most part every trip in the past month or so has been good for me...no skunks (knock on wood) and lots of C&R Stripers...as other have observed- the Stripers are fat and frisky-lures? Jighead with soft plastic swimbaits have been consistently good lures...bucktails have been the better Speckled Trout producers for me and walk the dog takes second place to noisy poppers on top water...gold 1/2 oz Kastmasters have been killer on breaking fish...and throwing XRap XR-10 blue/silver lures around rock jetties/rip rap produces bigger fish consistently..

That distance on a single kayak outing is very impressive. As impressive as your catches!

Haha thanks, the fish per mile (fpm) for the trip was lackluster, but overall the trip wasn't too bad. The second trip was probably 1/2 the mileage, maybe slightly more, but featured much larger fish, albeit a few less.

I don’t think I have ever covered 25 miles in two trips...but looking at my fishing log for 2019, the SMOG crew has had an exceptional season...it seemed like a really bad year, until you look at the catches, the big fish, the consistency...2018 was really a down year and 2019 started off as another, but mid season it improved and improved and improved...one great thing is all of us have practiced catch and release for Stripers...and it is rare when we don’t catch at least one legal keeper every trip...so I cannot say that 2019 is an “off year”...it is not a “usual” year...it is just different...

2019 has been different for me too, Ron. I may go the entire year without a legal striper in my kayak unless I happen across some during Rocktober. But that's OK with me. I've kind of lost the striper fever with the tough start to our year and the concern about the state of the striper stock. I should really just leave the little ones alone. I've had some other angling successes to make up for the scarcity of stripers this year. And there's still plenty of fishing left for other species in 2019, especially when this darned wind stops howling.
