  • South River Report

I just got back from fishing. I went out about 3:00 - 3:30 and fished to about 7:30. I caught 8 stripers, 19" to 25". All were caught on trolled crankbaits. I was using a X-Rap, Glass Rap, in Silver Ghost and a YoZuri Hardcore Drum in Shad color. I also caught two dinks. Sorry about having no photos. I forgot my camera. Its always something.

All the fish were caught in one area, in about a 45 minute to an hour period of time. I had a couple of double take downs. I lost two fish from the other rod before I could get to them, while bringing in a fish on the other rod. I probably should have kept up the trolling motor speed, but on light tackle, it makes it harder to get the fish in. I would rather miss a few fish and use light tackle to troll. It was really fun, I would troll back and forth on this one spot and there they were. It was on a sharp drop off. They must have been feeding on bait passing over the ledge. That is how I first found the school. After hooking the eight, the school just seemed to shut down. Today, I was just out for fun. All fish were spared

There is still alot of bait in the river. I also marked alot of larger fish. However, they were only feeding in the one area. I could have tried some other lures to entice some bites, but I was not out that long. I just kept moving. It has been a while since I have been out fishing. The water in the river has cleared up considerably since the storms.

I wanted to check out the creek or what they call a lake behind Turkey Point Island, but I just could not take myself away from trolling. I got as close as I could while trolling. There is a flat to cross, which kept me out while trolling, before you can get into the creek. For those planning on making the meet and greet, that creek looks pretty good. From what I could see, there are alot of old piles at the mouth. The charts also show a couple wrecks. So the white perch fishing in that area should be pretty good. I have really never thought about fishing back there. I think that is where Kayak 456 fishes. He does pretty good in that area. So it may be a possibility for some. I am going back out tomorrow. If I get a chance I will go back in the creek and throw around a rooster tail or jigs to see what happens.

Anyone interested in going out on the South River tomorrow let me know. I am going out around 2:00 or so. It was alot of fun today.

One other thing. I noticed alot of boats anchored out around the pipe, which runs out of Thomas Point. It is in the shallows. The pipe is covered with rocks. Something must be going on there, probably live line fishing. That may also be a possibility for the meet and greet.

Never fished that river, so I'm going to have to join you someday. Anxious for the citations coming in November. Do they wander into that river?

The largest fish that I have seen come out of the river was a 31 inch fish. I am sure the occasional big fish enters the mouth of the river. Where I fish, is where the river meets the bay. However, the really big fish are in the spring in the main bay along the shipping channel.

It was a good day. I did even better today. Yesterday the depth varied between 13' to 16'. However, they were relating to a drop off, both days. Today, I found a group of fish that were holding in a 13' area, and if I moved off the 13" depth, I would not catch any fish. It is strange like that sometimes. The water temperature is 65 degrees. I noticed several boats just off Thomas Point, in the shallows, both days, I guess live line fishing.

Andrew, sorry, I felt a little guilty talking about your spot on the forum. Are you and your dad going to try to make the meet and greet on the 22nd. You could probably teach us a few things. I have not heard much from you since school started.

are you talking about the submerged rocks at mouth of 'fishing creek' i think it's called on north side of TP park? i've fished there a little bit and have caught keepers and it's a fine spot, but i'd call it a longish paddle from hillsmere. the expression 'long walk for a short drink' comes to mind, but maybe it's firing??

from what i can tell - there's an entire website dedicated to fishing there with catch logs etc :

Yes, its where the pipe runs out from the point. Its not really that long. I have paddled to the light house myself. Some kayakers could paddle that in no time. Recently, keep in mind, I use an electic to troll out in that area. During the spring, I troll out past the light house. There are also a few others on the forum that use electrics. So thats pretty much in range. It probably all depends on ones perspective.

                    PS: Its about 3 n/miles.
