  • Goodhands Creek launch produced stripers

John Rentch and I had an enjoyable morning fishing out of Goodhands Creek. I launched at 8:25. The parking lot was nearly empty at that hour.

The seas were flat calm initially but developed a chop later from all the boat wakes. The water level was high but dropped during the morning. With high tide about 6:30, the tidal current was moving nicely while we were out there. I worked my usual route around shorelines and points in Prospect Bay and the Kent Narrows breakwater. John R. worked different areas.

I trolled 4 lines – two had 4.5” crankbaits (Rapala X-Rap 10 and Yozuri) – both with the original trebles replaced with inline J hooks. The other two lines had 3/16-oz jigheads and 3” paddletails. The crankbaits were much more productive today, accounting for 75% of the bites.

Over three hours of trolling, I caught 14 stripers, including fish of 19”, 20”, and 20.5” (the largest is shown below).

I had at least another 10 fish on the line that shook a bit and came loose. John had the largest fish of the day – he can add his story separately.

The areas I targeted today are mostly shallow water (2’ to 6’). They usually fish better with higher water levels, like today. The crankbaits I used today dive several feet and dart around. When the water is shallow or the SAVs are thick, this size of crankbaits is not very productive. The moving outgoing current helped too. The two most productive locations were both points that jutted out into current. There were visible rip lines moving down-current from the points. I caught multiple fish in these rips and on the flanks of the rips.

After struggling in my home waters (Severn River) to find stripers, today was a welcome change. With low winds projected for the next several days, I am likely to try again soon from Goodhands. I am hoping to find some larger fish soon.

Great to finally hear a good report from up north. Those fat footballs fight so well in this cooler water and interesting they wanted the crank bait. Was the water stained?

Several of us fished St Jerome’s and managed 3 trout today. The more depressing news was the return of CNR with a vengeance. I “caught” 4 of them today, fortunately all on cheap jig heads. If I’d been using crankbaits it would have been an expensive day.

    Thanks for your report.

Great report. I'm watching the clock again today. Went out early this morning and had some luck with a trout that was a bit too small. It's looking like conditions are favorable and I'm going to try again this evening. Stay safe out there everyone!

The water was stained a bit brown, but not bad. For years I never trolled crankbaits. I have been experimenting with them for the past 2-3 years. They have produced well this spring.

Feel free to keep the rays in your southern waters.

Just want to thank you for the report, I had never fished from goodhands but thought I would give it a shot after your report. I was able to go for a few hours tonight, it turned out to be beautiful evening. I found some good current and some good fish. I trolled up current and drifted back while casting, caught fish both ways. I used 4” paddle tails; green glitter and white...both caught fish (no crankbaits) I even caught a 25” catfish that thought it was a tarpon, it jumped out of the water so high. It pulled me around pretty good before I could land it with my light tackle. I decided to troll around the island before I left and found a hole out front that held some quality fish as well. Caught 10 Stripers over 20”; a bunch in the high teens and one ugly catfish Thank everybody for your reports...they really do help those of us that can’t get out much. Stay safe!

Congratulations on a good outing. I had not fished in that area in May in previous years (I usually started in mid summer). But with the poor water quality in the Severn at the moment, I did an experimental trip to Goodhands that paid off. That led me to explore other nearby launches, leading to a very productive week of catching. Over the years I have fished from many different launches within an hour of Annapolis, but not during all seasons at all ramps. I enjoy going exploring every now and then to see what I might find in a new location or in a familiar location but different time of year.

We are blessed with numerous launch spots. Under most wind conditions, it is possible to find some spots to fish that will not be too disrupted by wind. You should also consider the tides when choosing your launch spot.

I’ve always wanted to fish Kent Island just never went over there because I don’t like dealing with the bridge traffic. Decided to try it out last weekend based on your report and I had one of my best days fishing. Over 10 19 in stripers with the biggest being 22. Sod banks and current produced in pretty much every location I tried. Trolling only produced small stripers. Every Bigger fish was caught casting a rapala xrap. Never fished a jerk bait very hard other than trolling and it worked great. I even caught a few aggressive white perch on the 4in xrap. Thanks for the report John.

Congratulations on your successful outing. I returned to Goodhands the week after I filed the original report and caught very little. I guess it depends on when you are there. The water quality in my usual Western Shore spots has been lousy for the past month. The QA County launches on or near Kent Island have put me into clean water with good results. You can usually find at least one of the launches there that gives you some shelter from the wind. This year in particular, the bridge traffic has been light when I cross over in the early morning hours.

Thank you, I appreciate your reports. I bought the QA yearly pass so I hope to try out some different launches over there. It was a nice place to launch because there’s little boat traffic if you stay closer to the shore. I also like how it was skinny water fishing. I tried going under the narrows bridge but there was way to much current for my liking.
