Made the trip down to my old stomping grounds(or waters) today in hopes of catching some fish. I got my new predator pdl on the water right around 5:30am to try and get some fishing in before the heat got to be to much. Now I will start by saying that having gone from a paddle to pedal kayak, back to paddle, and arriving at pedal again, I really forgot how much I missed having my hands free. I had a hobie PA12 at one point and I must say that the predator pdl has really blown me away.

Ok enough about kayak talk, I launched at Jonas Green park and headed toward Rt. 50 bridge. I was pretty set on checking out an oyster bed that I used to have success at. I was trolling 3 rods, 2 with paddle tails and 1 rapala x-rap. Well as luck would have as I arrived at the oyster bed I saw bait fish breaking everywhere on the surface. I started casting the paddle tail into the breaking bait and immediately started hooking up with small stripers between 10-12". At times I was surrounded in all directions by different groups of bait being chased around. I began to lose count of how many fish I was catching at that location.

In hopes of finding bigger fish I moved on from the bait fish blitz. I trolled up past Rt. 50 bridge and then made my way back toward the mouth of the Severn. Just as I cleared the 450 bridge, the rod with the X-rap bends over and starts ripping drag. Very quickly I realized this was not the fish I was hoping it was, although a fun fight, I realized that It was a snagged skate who decided that instead of snagging my cheap paddle tails he would steal my not so cheap x-rap. Picked up 2 more 10-12" stripers trolling from the mouth back to Jonas Green. All in all it was a great day and it felt good to get back on the River I loved fishing.

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear you found fish on your visit to our beloved Severn River. Did you find any perch or did you not target them?

I decided not to target them. I was off the water by 10:30 and it was even hot then. If I had decided to stay longer I probably would have.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a bald eagle on the Severn. Congrats on a great day!

A few months ago, my wife and I were rounding the corner on one of the Severn tributaries when we startled a bald eagle out of a dead tree. It flew right out in front of us carrying its half-eaten catfish, a decent sized one at that. One of the more interesting things I’ve seen on the Severn. Glad you had some luck!

I'm glad you had success on the Severn. The mahogany tide that "graced" its waters for several weeks in late spring/early summer depressed the fishing. Now that the mahogany tide has moved away, the river offers a lot of opportunities for the rest of the year.
