Hey folks! Been a while since I've been on here or out on the kayak. I finally dusted off the gear and figured I'd give my hand at Perch fishing in smaller waters. I've never been a great perch fisherman, but I really enjoyed the ultralight gear and simple load out. I'll be making more frequent trips in hopes of dialing them in.

With fish tacos on the mind, we launched around 4pm hoping the rising tide and cooling sun would be in our favor if we stuck near structure. It was very hot, but a touch cooler than the day before with a decent breeze from the North. Finding them was a bit sporadic and when we did, I was getting a lot of short strikes from little guys. That usually tells me to go a little deeper or switch presentation? I tried a few things, but was only getting hits on 1/6 or 1/8 rooster tails in white or yellow. Admittedly its the only spinner I had on me. I've read that others have luck with modified beetle spins and I think that would have been the ticket here as well. Our biggest of the day goes to my buddy, who used a Road Runner tipped with fresh caught mummichog. With a couple small Striper in the mix, we caught a dozen or so Perch between us and ended up keeping only three. Biggest just over 10" and smallest at 9"

The boat and jet ski traffic was insane. With Curtis creek and Patapsco so close by, it was kind of crazy how many were racing each other and ripping around Brewer's Island at full speed. We were the only yakkers on the water not participating, and maybe that's why, so I realized that it was probably my buddy and I who were in the wrong spot. Then again, it was Sunday.

Congratulations on a nice outing.

I think recreational boaters are out out on Sundays more than any other day in our local waters. And the jet skiers can be the most annoying. Second to that would be the speeding boats towing water skiers or tubes. They are oblivious to their wakes, or if they realize it, they enjoy watching us kayakers bounce in their waves. I usually try to avoid Sundays but when the weather and tides are right, it's sometimes worth a chance to go out on busy boat days -- especially when stripers mingle with perch, as they often do at this time of year. Just be mindful of possible heat regulations on stripers as Mike reminded us of in another thread.

Lucky us, we hit the trifecta I forgot how busy the weekends can be on the water. It looked like fun, but Im afraid our fishing suffered a bit. No worries though. I'm happy I was able to have a good time.
