Lower PAX 8-15 - 6 species

Lower Patuxent midway between Prince Frederick and Solomans.
The 3 of us launched at 9:00 AM, High Tide at 12 noon.
Wife crabbed, SIL and I fished.
It drizzled on and off, my type of fishing weather.

I was throwing a 1/16 oz Roadrunner (black/char) with Pumpkin seed 2" grub tail on a 5' UL set up.

And a a 1/4 Road runner (Blue/wht) with a 3" white grub tail on a 6' Med rod.

Tons of short strikes and hits on the larger roadrunner, so I finally resigned to using the UL set up (Dink fest special).
All fish were caught casting to shore around cover.

Between me and SIL 50+ White perch, ~8 over 9"
4 catfish in the 2-3# range (on jig with grub tail)
3 Puppy Drum
Took a sleigh ride with a skate or ray,, it finally broke off.
5 Striped Bass 10-14" range.
35++ crabs,, 16 keepers.

All and all a fun day,

Downsizing tackle is tons of fun...spring of the year I get a kick out of using UL 4# test spinning tackle for catch and release put and take rainbow trout in local ponds and lakes...A 14 inch rainbow puts up one great fight if matched with Ultralight spinning tackle...and they are a really pretty fish in crystal clear waters...this time of year, I enjoy the challenge of downsize spinning tackle for salt water species that visit our region...Speckled trout, flounder, spanish mackerel, redfish, and the bigger than “tailor” bluefish that occasionally show up on the flats...all are a challenge to find, target, figure out a strategy and then to catch...

While we have "occasionally" fished local (salt/brackish) in the last 15 years, 20:1 we were on mountain rivers chasing smallmouth.
I always had a 5' UL for when we'd park on a ledge,, endless 6-12" Smallies.

Now that the wife and I have "Discovered" the water all around us (Calvert),, I get to start over the learning process all over again.

I do have a love for topwater blowups,, where, when, how, who for that lower Patuxent waters?
Do larger Reds and Rocks ever come in this area??

We catch plenty of nice 20-24” stripers in the lower Patuxent. I’ve never fished north of Greenwell State park but imagine the bigger stripers come up as far as Benedict on occasion, but a much better chance further down the river. The Patuxent is a prime spawning River, why it’s closed to all striper fishing until June 1 each year.
Big reds are much more an Eastern shore species but you can catch puppies in the Pax. An occasional 20 might show up but I’ve not heard of bull reds in the Pax.
