  • Cicada Fishing

I was only 13 the last time the Brood X cicadas emerged. I remember catching a lot of bass in the neighborhood ponds on topwater. Anyone have any plans to take advantage this time around, or target species you don’t normally target?

It will be interesting to see what snakeheads make of them. Also, a rare opportunity to catch topwater carp on the fly.

I’m STOKED for topwater fishing this year. It’s going to be absolutely insane. Carp will be hitting hula poppers and tiny torpedos like crackheads on a $100 rock. I remember fishing lake raystown in PA during the last cicada brood and catching 10-20 lb carp on every other cast, all weekend long. Still my PB in terms of sheer weight of fish landed on a trip. Easily 750-1,000 lbs of fish caught in maybe 6 hours of fishing.

That sounds like a blast. Carp are certainly underrated in my experience. They’re huge and put up a great fight. I’ve targeted them a few times a while back without much luck, but the cicada emergence should change that. I’m sure any of the central MD reservoirs are a good bet.

I'm excited for the top water! I think I'm going to try getting into Snakehead this year and maybe fish more local reservoirs. I'm going to try Cash lake tomorrow just to get out.

Some friends doing yard work reported digging up a large number of Brood X cicadas that were borrowing just below the surface of their yard this weekend. They reported finding 30 of them while digging up a hole to plant a single tree (sure hope they don't destroy it when they lay their eggs). So it sounds like they may start emerging any time now. We have a string of 70 degree days in the forecast for next week so I have a feeling we will be seeing them then!

I just bought one of these in anticipation of the hatch: https://savage-gear.com/products/lur...lers/3d-cicada

I'm sure if the fish are really keyed in on cicadas then any small topwater lure would work but I figured why not have fun with it

How was the fishing at Cash Lake? We went for a hike around there last spring, and I thought it might be worth going back to fish sometime.

My fishing partner did quite well at Cash Lake last year in September while I had COVID. He sent a lot of pictures of bass and pickerel. I have not been as fortunate at Cash Lake, which is a shame since it is 15 minutes from my home.
