  • Any update on the Severn or Weems?

    Hi everyone,

I am hoping to get out for a few hours this weekend as I have not been fishing in over a month. I have been itching to get back to the Severn and Weems after some great fishing last year. Does anyone have any updates on the fishing here? A bad report would be helpful also. If I do not go here, I will likely hit one of the QA launches on Eastern Bay (but the tides do not appear to be cooperating in the early morning).

I cannot wait until I am finished moving and can spend a little more time and energy on fishing. One of these days, I am going to get down to St Mary's County and try my luck.

Last year, I fished the Severn regularly and eventually found some spots that appeared to holding fish reliably. If the fish do not return to the Severn, I suppose I will have to put in the legwork to scout some other areas.

Thank you to everyone for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I fished Weems Creek for 3 hours on Wednesday, and it was very slow.

A bunch of my work meetings got canceled this afternoon so I took a few hours off and fished Weems from 2-6. Good news - I caught 30-plus perch. Bad news - one was maybe a whisker over 9" and the rest were smaller (some, a bunch smaller). Most were caught on a beetle spin, with at least half coming in a 30-minute or so period along the same 150 feet of shore and docks. Next time, I'm bringing my ultra-light.

Based on my recent experiences, there's no mistaking Weems right now for Weems last Aug/Sep/Oct, when you could reasonably expect to catch rock or pickerel to go with the perch. But, it's beautiful and calm and I'm not gonna complain about catching a lot of small fish. I guess what I'm saying is that if you adjust your expectations accordingly, you might have a great day out there.

i was thinking about going out tomorrow AM to jonas green (severn) go perching as well, however wind forecasts are approaching double digits, so not sure. I may head to mattawoman or jug bay since they're still forecasted for single digits. not sure.

Weems has been slow all season. I'm probably going to give it another month or more before trying it again. It is a very convenient place to launch and fish which makes it an easy fallback, but I'm going to make an effort to fish other spots in the area.
