  • Little Choptank?

I'm considering going to Little Choptank this weekend to see if I can find some specks. Been hearing good reports from the area.

I'm wondering where to launch in this area? Looking at DNR's public water access map here: https://maryland.maps.arcgis.com/app...5f55ca6dcefc8a it looks like there are only two launches, Ragged Point and Madison. I like the looks of the creek that Ragged Point marina is on... is there anything important to know about using that launch?

Any other launches in the area I might be overlooking?

    Thanks!

    Dave -

I never used the Ragged Pt launch. I have fished the two points to the east of where that creek enters the river with mixed success. I launch several times each year from Madison. From that launch, I can fish both sides of the river. For me, July and August are not ideal times to fish shallow areas there because the water is too warm. May, June, Sept, and Oct offer better opportunities. My trip on May 27 produced more fish than a second trip on July 7.

Like most other places, if you can find current moving past a point, you stand a decent chance of catching fish. Without moving current, the odds go down. Also watch the wind forecasts. Winds from certain direction can make it tough on kayak anglers.

    Good luck if you go.

Thanks for the tips John. I was skeptical too but the reports from both FishTalk and Anglers indicate that the speck bite is good in this region of the Easter Shore right now. I always keep my expectations in check when trying new water so at any rate this will be a good scouting trip (if I decide to even go) for later in the year when the water starts cooling down. I'll be sure to bring perch gear too in case the specks and rockfish don't want to play.

How is the Madison launch? Is there a lot of grass in that area? I can't quite tell from the aerial imagery.
