Had a productive day thanks to y'alls tips. I launched at sunrise from the Janes Island boat ramp and made my way North. Trolled a little here and there but I'm not that big on trolling so made my way to some spots I had planned out. Worked out since it was getting a little windy. For the first few hours caught a few schoolies and small specks, began to lose count. As the tide began moving in, Things turned up when I began to work some grass beds, caught a bunch of 15" schoolies and small specs cast after cast, a 15" puppy drum (my first red), and then caught a 19" spec. Had to call the day short due to a family emergency but what a day fishing wise.

jjyak -- Excellent outing. May I ask what you were casting? I'd like to encounter fishing like yours when I visit Janes Island shortly -- without the family emergency, of course. I hope all is well in that regard.

I am curious about taking a weekend on the Eastern Shore to fish some new water. I have been to Janes Island before, but never fished. Approximately how much longer is the fishing likely to be good in this area this year?Comment

Rob - I've caught plenty of fish there into mid-October. Never been out at Janes Island any later than that.Comment

On Friday. my father told me that he had some fresh-picked crab meat and personally cleaned soft crabs for me, so I drove down to Crisfield on Saturday morning to see him and pick up the goodies. I managed to sneak out to Janes Island for a few hours - launched around 2 pm and fished till 6:30. The launch was busy with boaters and kayakers. I had no idea at the time that it was the weekend of the Tangier classic. I took my own (and plenty of others') advice from this thread but still came up almost empty. Just two small specs to show for all the paddling, with one caught on the troll and one casting to the grass. Once I made the decision to head back in, I casted out one final line to troll on the way to the launch. Less than 30 seconds later, it was fish on, and unlike my other two hookups on the day, this one was actually putting up a fight. Unfortunately, my "this really saved the day" thoughts were overly presumptuous, because in just the one split second of slack line that occurred while I secured my paddle, it was "fish off" instead.
Really beautiful day out there. Not a single yakker or boater I talked to was having much luck either, though I swear at least half of them told me "You should have been down here last week. The bite was on." The usual fisherman's tale in my experience. I did check out the IG page for the tourney and one kayaker boated a 23" inch spec. I hope it was one of y'all that post here.Comment

Plenty of Specs and Striper caught during the classic last weekend. And plenty stories of nice ones lost at the Kayak which maybe those paper mouths were not holding the hooks very well. Got to love those fish stories and I’m sure the bite will pick back up now the winds are back down and the pressure has let up.
