Conditions not great this morning but I knew one spot that would provide some shelter from the wind. I started the day like I always do these days, with a chug bug. First cast a line screamer takes it and 10 seconds later it was off. Bad omen I thought. Next cast got a 17” striper, and that was it for topwater. I trolled for about 30 minutes without a sniff so put on perch pounder and started catching some decent perch.

On one of my casts a better fish hit, a 17” trout. Biggest I’d seen in a while.

Started trolling again and got a 14” trout but not much happening where I was so relocated to another spot that can have trout. Quickly picked up another 17”, so I stopped and started casting a pearl blue glimmer Zman. Second cast this 19 1/2” trout smashed it.

Cast after that, an 18. Next cast a decent fish when my leader knot failed (double uni, unusual for it to pull). By the time I got retied things had cooled. Picked up another 17 and a 15 but lost that precious 10 minutes when the big school was there.

The cooler water has brought significantly bigger trout back into the shallows. Hope they’re here for awhile.

      That's a great outing Mike.

My first thought after viewing your third photo was that is the last thing many baitfish see.

Nice going Mike. Your local waters continue to outperform those farther up the bay. I hope to return later this month to look for some of those larger trout.

Your picture of the open mouth clearly shows the two canine teeth on the upper jaw. Some of the trout I catch have just one tooth there. I guess they can get broken off during feeding. Do you see mostly two teeth or a single tooth in the trout you catch?

Good question, I generally don’t look. More interested in getting them unhooked without my fingers getting jabbed. I’ll have to start looking more closely.

Nice going Mike. Trout greater than 13" continue to elude me, yet you guys get them 17"+ like its nothing. Looks like I need to make another road trip soon.

Can confirm the specs are around. We got quite a few yesterday in sporty conditions, from 12-22". My buddy landed a 17.25" red and we got rockfish up to 23". Perch and lizard fish also made an appearance.Screenshot_20211011-101406_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20211010-180308_Gallery.jpg

From my catches, specks with 1 tooth are as common as specks with 2. It's close to 50/50 1 or 2.

Thanks Brian. That is similar to my informal observations. I hope to add a lot more data points this week when fishing in speck-rich waters. In either case, I am more cautious about putting my fingers near their mouths than for stripers or reds.
