  • St Marys' lake: Cold, Breezy, empty

Finally took the yak out again with some of my new apparel...namely my new backpaddle II splash jacket. The news from this trip is:
#1- Jacket really helped with the wind. Did not seem to hold in body heat as advertised, but I really did not expect much on that count.
#2- NOT a bite. Talked with a young man who had caught a few Pickerel lately, but I was skunked.
Great vistas (see pic) and quiet, though so i cannot complain. It does seem, however, that the cold is making things difficult for now.

Sorry for the skunk, Kevin. Everything I did today at work was wrong, so I should've just skipped out and met you there. I was hoping you were going to figure out the key to finding nice fish at that lake today.

Matt--there are crappie at St. Mary's Lake, but it's been a few years since I've last caught one. There's three spots with nice standing timber, but I've only ever caught crappie by the stand that's closest to the dock.

        Matt,
Crappie are always in Occoquan right under the long piers, but too far away from you.

I wish I could bring Occoquan to to you.

        Bill,
I'll let you know crappie in Lake Anna after this weekend, January 21.

Funny story, Bill. Guy is launching his jon boat and I start chatting. Ask about where they have been catching them. They say the rock by the dam....so I paddle over casting and changing lures...guy never shows. I worry, "Did I scare him off?" Eventually I return the the ramp and ther he is...at the far opposite end of the lake from where he said he was catching fish!!!
          Can't trust a fisherman. LOL

That is pretty funny. I usually fish the dam side, but it hasn't coughed up many fish lately despite being productive in the past. The other side of the lake gets pretty shallow and weedy, so I haven't spent much time there. It sounds like I should check it out. I also wonder if the yellow perch in the lake spawn in those areas, which is another reason to check it out.
