  • Severn Pickerel

The day was too nice to pass up so I launched at Jonas Green and fished a small tributary just to the West. Caught all these pickerel with a 3" storm shad with a twister tail. I had many more hits and fish that came unbuttoned.

Nice, were you able to improve for standing for the CCA tourney at all?

Glad you found lots of hungry linksiders! Last time I went there I found skim ice over the spots I wanted to fish and the water was very low. Gives me another option for this weekend...

Definitely no skim ice yesterday! I was sweating my arse off in my waders and dry top.

Nice work on the picks. Something occurred to me after thinking about losing pickerel while deciding how to gear up for this weekend. What kind of rod are you using? One of the first times I went pickerel fishing, I brought my 4'6" UL with me. I lost several fish before I switched to my 6' L or 6'6" UL. I think the 4'6" rod was too short to get a good hookset at the distances I was casting.

I'm using a 5'6" light action rod with 8lb power pro. The tip on that rod seems really soft, so that may be the issue. Although, the fish I have landed have been solidly hooked. I think that the shape of the fishes mouth might play into it as well. Good luck this weekend. Where are you fishing?

Not sure yet. Probably not the Severn, unfortunately. I probably won't make it up there until after the M&G, unless I take a day off. There are a couple spots closer to home that I want to check out for pickerel and perch that require high tides, which I have this weekend. I was wishing I had a third UL rod so I wouldn't have to change lures when I remembered I had the 4'6" rod, which got me thinking about the last time I used it...
