I arrived at Jonas Green about 7:15 this morning. A bunch of guys had already launched and were out of sight. I did see Rockchaser in the parking lot. I waited a while to see if any other guys showed up who were not familiar with the Severn tributaries, but by 8:15 nobody else had come. I launched into a cold stiff breeze and headed upstream to Manresa Cove. I saw moc and another kayaker leaving, and found Yak Fish, Camelbird, and Rockchaser searching for pickerel. I spent 45 minutes working my usual spots there, but the fish were not cooperating. Eventually Yak Fish hooked a very nice 19" pickerel (shown below). I think this was his first ever pickerel.
Since the bite in that tributary was not good today, the four of us headed to a second spot. Once there, I gave the guys an orientation and we each headed to different spots. I drew first blood with a 15.5" pickerel. I continued working different spots and ended with 4 pickerel, including one 17" rascal that bit the minnow while the rod was laying across the kayak with only 4 ft of line out. I didn't realize the fish was there, and when I began paddling, the rod almost fell out of the boat. I quickly wound it in.
Rockchaser and Camelbird were able to catch their first ever pickerels in this tributary, and Yak Fish caught another one too. I needed to leave at 11:15. I hope the other guys will add their experiences.
We saw a fox on the shoreline, and I saw some type of mammal swimming in the water (see photo). I could not identify it, but suspect it was a muskrat or young beaver.
