  • Mattawoman Creek Report 3/25

Fished with Matt (CB Kayak 02) and Don (Shield) today at Mattawoman creek. I went up the creek and anchored up in front of the old barge or whatever that thing is. Caught a nice 4.5 lb 22" Blue pretty quickly, but took a while before I finally caught another cat. This time is was a 20" channel.

I had a few other bumps, but no other hookups. Both cats were on Mullet chunks. Matt was slaying the Bass today and I'm sure Don probably caught some too, but I'll let them give their own report.

I invited the blue cat home for dinner, even though she was really at the top of my range for eating size. I got two good looking filets off of her:

She was eating good. Two good size fish and a large crayfish were in her stomach, which makes me think I should bring crayfish for bait next time:

Nice fish. I don't see many people on here showing a fish's stomach contents, it really does tell what their local preference is for feeding.

Nice cats and bass. I was visiting with my folks today, but I was thinking about fishing the Mattawoman a good part of the time.

I did not do as well as the others. Hooked three fish and lost them at the boat. At least I am very consistent with my fishing; I have started this year the way I ended last year. I’m really just giving the fish a chance before I grab them all up later this season

Good job fishing today guys. Nice Bass and Catfish. I was thinking of meeting you guys out there, but I was alittle under the weather on Saturday afternoon and decided to rest and stay in, especially with the so called bad weather that was predicted. Well, at my house today, I did not see a drop of rain during the daylight hours. This is why I am sorry to say that I rarely have faith in a weather forecast unless I research it myself. If I was feeling better, I would have gone today.

She had a pretty solid gut, so I decided to see what was going on in there. I didnt expect to see a crayfish...

Next time, I hope go with one of you guys that have a little more experience in the creek. I feel like I should be catching more fish there, but just cant quite get it right. The water was pretty stained today though...

Glad to see you guys got into some fish! I had some friends in town this weekend and didn't have a chance to hit the water. Guess I will just have to make up for it next weekend

Perhaps try further downstream? I would suggest launching at the state park and trying the channel around there. I have caught some big cats down there. I also suggest using cutbait. I used to use clam snouts for catfish from shore. I would catch a ton of catfish, mostly channels and whites, but they would max out at 5 pounds. I would still recommend that bait, though...it seems gets better the more times you freeze/thaw it. When I started using cut herring, my average size rocketed up to 7-10 pounds! Blue cats prefer cut bait it seems. You can't keep herring now, so I would suggest menhaden or mullet. Scour the baitshops for what cutbait they have. You can even use cut white perch if you catch them. Fishfinder rigs with 3/0 or bigger hooks and 8-12 inch leaders and 3 ounce weights.
