  • Got a massive trout!

I needed some encouragement after getting skunked on the Flats yesterday so I figured I'd hit my locally stocked trout stream as opening day is this morning. I arrived at 5:30 to find only a spot or two left to park, but fortunately my spot was untouched by other fisherman. I got my limit in about a half hour. I would have liked to catch more but every one swallows the powerbait so catch and release was not an option.

I did get lucky and catch a massive trout. Here's a pic with the big one next to a typical stocked trout. It fits in the mouth of the big one :-)
I've fished for trout all my life and this is a first for me. It worked out a little funny because a guy saw me catching fish and he wasn't having luck. He asked for advice so I told him to fish right next to me and I'll show him how to do it. I had just gotten done saying to him that I'm really hoping to get one of the really big hold over trouts that they stock and literally seconds later this thing was on the end. I kept saying "holy shit, holy shit" and the guy I told to stand right next to me happened to have a big net and he netted it for me. Good thing because it would have been hard to get onto shore. I may have thrown my rod in the water if it would have gotten off.

Nice trout! how big was she? I caught my limit today too, but no big ones. I did catch 12" native brown though in addition to my stocked rainbow limit, so that was a little bonus. The brown was released for someone else to enjoy

THere's a trout pax on my commute that just opened... I may stopmfrom time to time. I was wondering what to use cause fly fishing in the woods is difficult.

I like the corn or orange glitter powerbait. I tie on two very tiny treble hooks...about as small as you can find. I clip two splitshots, also pretty light, just above the powerbait. It's a bit of a feel thing and that depends on the current. You want the powerbait to be pulled downstream but the splitshots should hit every rock along the way. Cast across the river, never upstream because you'll get wrapped around a rock. Keep the rod high to keep as much line out of the water as possible. When your line stops going, tip the rod just a bit to get it over a rock or two...you'll feel them. Then gently let your rod dip in the direction of the current, basically letting your powerbait float further but you are controlling it's speed rather than letting the current rip it along. When you feel a nibble, give slack...when you feel it again, set the hook!
