  • Susquehanna Flats 4-1-2012 . Schoolies

Headed out this morning at around 7am from Rogues Harbor, Elk Neck State Park. Hit the very southern portion of the flats. Many boats were there. Its a good ways away from the launch, several miles.

Started off jigging 5" chartruese bass assassins on 1/2oz jigs and picked up a very feisty 10" white perch.

moved around a little and jigged some more and picked up a very small micro schoolie, about 10". A little while later I pickup another big perch.

about 1/2 hr later all the boats picked up and left and moved to another location, someone probably picked up some fish and radioed the fleet.

I go to startup my trolling motor and i get nothing. Motor was not turning

I decided that since I was a good 4 - 5 miles away from the launch that I would paddle back. Along the way I decided to drop my lines and troll my jigs slowly.

Not much longer after, boom, I've got a big fish on. Start to fight it and she spits the hook . I drop my lines again to troll and about 20 minutes later I pickup a 20" schoolie on a white/black glitter 5" bass assassin.

Tried to troll some more and no bites. I didn't see any other fish landed. Wasn't marking much either.

Despite the motor issue I am very happy to have picked up my first striper on the kayak.

    Water temps 51.5 - 53.5

I got a great workout today

Cool deal. Around 1200 it started to get windy and cold mid bay. At least you weren't skunked.

I'm looking to get out to the flats in the coming weeks. Is this a good place to launch from if you have never fished the flats?

Minh - Just before you take the left turn off of Rt272 to get to Rogue Harbor you past the entrance to the State Park's beach thats on the right side of Rt272. Did you notice if the entrance gate was open? Or maybe was it open when you left the park? Just wondering if they have opened up the beach area yet this year.

Thanks Everyone. It was a fun time despite the motor issue.

Rogues wasn't a bad place to launch. If you are paddling then it would be a long paddle to get to the south end of the flats (trust me). I decided to launch here as opposed to the North East Beach Road soft launch as I had 2 batteries and other stuff to load and didn't want to port my kayak 500ft with all that weight. The North East Beach Rd soft launch would definitely put you closer to the southern end of the flats.

I didn't notice if the beach launch area on North East Beach Rd was open. I was tempted to check it out but decided to just head straight to Rogues to get my lines in the water.

Good luck to all that give it a shot

Congrats on your first stripers. It sounds like the action is picking up on the flats according to reports on tidalfish.
