  • Some more Mattawoman cats 4/7/12

I fished the Mattawoman again today. Didn't bother with the other fish and went straight for the cats. The furniture store was out of Menhaden, so I had bloodworms, nightcrawlers, minnows and an old perch head.

I quickly caught 6 cats within an hour and a half on worms and minnows. Had a bite on the perch head, but no hookup.

I stayed another 4 hours, but only caught 2 more during that time. I wonder if the mess of cats hanging off the side of the yak was emanating schrekstoff.

Ended up with 5 good eatin' cats. Still waiting for that big one...

Maybe some bigger baits could land you that big one? Ive always caught bigger ones on cut bunker or gizzard shad. I always have better luck with long strips like fillets rather then using chunks. Those are def the size you want to eat tho congrats.

Nice work! Are you just using bait on a jighead, or is there more lead involved in your rig somewhere else?

Good work! Are those blue catfish? We caught some blue yesterday at Bushwood, and they have some mean pec and dorsal sharpies.

Nice work on the cats even if you didn't get the biggun. It would be interesting to fish the same area on different days and use a stringer on one day and a cooler on another. It would be hard to control for all the other conditions, though.

                  Thanks.

Backwater: Yes... need... bigger... bait! I was hoping the previously-frozen perch head would do the trick, but i guess not.

shadyfisher: For the worms yeah, just jigheads. They're heavy enough to get to the bottom. For the bigger bait I use a fishfinder rig.

tufnik: Yeah they're blue cats, as far as I know. WHen you catch them they're nice and blue, and after a little while on the stringer, they become more brown. Yeah, nasty spikes.

Ron: I spent some time last night filleting them (well to be honest, I was instructing and supervising my girlfriend who was doing it). It was our first time, but I think we did a pretty good job. I was surprised to see how much meat they provide. And I was horrified when one of them started moving after being filleted.

ictalurus: will try the cooler next time. I don't like schrekstoff.
