  • Mariner Point 4/9/12

This morning I launched out of Mariner Point Marina in Joppatowne around 8am. After talking to some other guys launching their boats, I found out there was a nice quarry that housed a lot of bass. I headed out trolling a RattleTrap and a Rapala DT-6.
After about 20 minutes without a bite, I saw a nice bass jump about 30 feet in front of me so I decided to stop and fish that area on the way to the quarry. Bad idea.... it was impossible with the winds blowing through. I hooked a log about 3 feet long and ended up bring it to the surface to retrieve my lure. New Tree bass state record in the boat! I got my gear situated and headed on my way towards the quarry.
I was told to look for something that looked like a collapsed metal fence going across the water. It was pretty easy to find, there were two metal fence post on each side of the waterway (which was about 30-40 feet wide) with what looked to be a collapsed fence. This area opened into a smaller circular section with an island in the middle and past that was the main rock quarry lake, which also had a nice island to fish around in the middle. There were about ten bass boats in the quarry working tree lines with various lures. One in particular was using a pig in jig with zoom chunks. He was fishing with his son who was about 12. After a while, his son's rod bent in half and he reeled in a nice 5 pound largemouth. I worked the tree lines for about 4 hours without any success at all.
Around 1 o'clock I decided to take advantage of the rough winds on my way back. I decided to fish a cove closer to the boat launch. It is lined with boat docks and nice cover. The water was about 6 feet deep and full of crappie. Another guy also fishing with his son, caught a nice 15.5 in. 1 lb 12 oz crappie on a bobber, two split shots and live minnows. I caught one fish in the area. It was a small bass but it was better than being skunked.
I am going back tomorrow armed with bobber, splits and minnows! If the winds are calm, I may go back to the quarry. If anyone wants to join me tomorrow, I will be launching at 8am.

    Thanks for reading,

Thanks for sharing your trip. I've always wanted to get up to that quarry in my kayak but never have. I've fished it from shore a couple of times and caught bass, crappie and yellow perch. I've heard that Stripers will go in there at times and some nice small mouth are in there too. I know a guy that once caught 2 nice sized largemouth on a rattle trap at the same time in there. Pretty cool spot! How did you get there? I've heard of people that will go to the back of the cove that is just about straight across from the mariner point ramp and then drag a short distance through the woods, but I'm not sure the landowner like this much...

@Tufnik I'll let you know how many I catch tomorrow.

        @Shadyfisher85
Ryan, I launched from mariner point and headed to left (From the point of view of standing on the boat dock looking out towards the water. I followed this canal until it opened up a bit. To the left is the area with the nice crappie. To get to the quarry you just follow the shoreline on the right. You will see the bridge in the distance. Just keep going right along the shoreline. Your route is basically like a horseshoe.

Just keep going for about a mile and the entrance is on the right.

I am fishing everyday this week, so I'll let you know if I go back to the quarry.

Cliff did you launch from the state park or the marina, I looked on google earth and it looks like both launches are near each other? Does either one charge a launch fee for a Yak?

I may go out there Wed and try for some Bass, depending on the weather. I think I see the route you took to get to that quarry lake so i may check that out too.

Thanks for the report Cliff. That's one of my favorite areas to fish. It's a little tricky to get there and if the wind is blowing it's hard to hold still. It's much better during the week because this small little area gets some pressure.

Thanks for the detailed report! I've been trying to figure out exactly how to get there for a while. Always heard stories about great fishing there and it is pretty close to me so it wouldn't be such a drive. I'm free to fish both Wednesday and Friday this week. If you find yourself going back there or just fishing somewhere in the harford county area I'll join you

I am planning on fishing there tomorrow morning, though I usually get a later start (between 9 and 10 am) since I am working nights right now. Feel free to PM me if some people are going out and want to meet up.

@mi327 I believe I launched from the park.

@Yak_Fish What do you usually use in that quarry?

@Splitscreen I am down to fish tomorrow. What time do you want to meet up? I am down to go early when they open to avoid wind.

It gets a lot of pressure so those fish have seen a lot of lures. The best thing I've found is to fish slowly with a jig or worm....if it looks like an area that you may get hung up in, that's where I'd throw. I've also had luck using a spinner bait, fished slowly. There are lots of sharp drop offs that I'd like to think hold bass but they never seem to produce for me. There are plenty of local fisherman around the bank that may scare them off to more private areas.

I've lived in the area my whole life and have never fished there and my nephew even has a shore home right there on rumsey island. Definitely need to give that place a try some time. Sounds like it gets a lil crowded already though.

A buddy and I fished this area including the quarry about two weeks ago targeting bass and crappie. Brought shiners and fished with various lures as well. Did not catch a single crappie or bass. The only thing we could get to bite was small bluegill and small yellow perch on nightcrawlers. This area is way overfished and although this was my first time out there with the yak, i have fished several times there from the bank with little to show for it. I did not fish that first cove your talking about mostly because it was terribly windy that day.

I was going to head out again today but the tide was too far out for me to get there. I got stuck on the tip of the point like 4 times. It was like 5 inches deep... I gave up, reloaded the PA and went to Lake Roland. Lake Roland has REALLY grown on me. Although the average bass is about 8-10 inches, they are fun to catch and currently have a pretty easy pattern. I am making a post about me day at Lake Roland.
