This morning I launched out of Mariner Point Marina in Joppatowne around 8am. After talking to some other guys launching their boats, I found out there was a nice quarry that housed a lot of bass. I headed out trolling a RattleTrap and a Rapala DT-6.
After about 20 minutes without a bite, I saw a nice bass jump about 30 feet in front of me so I decided to stop and fish that area on the way to the quarry. Bad idea.... it was impossible with the winds blowing through. I hooked a log about 3 feet long and ended up bring it to the surface to retrieve my lure. New Tree bass state record in the boat! I got my gear situated and headed on my way towards the quarry.
I was told to look for something that looked like a collapsed metal fence going across the water. It was pretty easy to find, there were two metal fence post on each side of the waterway (which was about 30-40 feet wide) with what looked to be a collapsed fence. This area opened into a smaller circular section with an island in the middle and past that was the main rock quarry lake, which also had a nice island to fish around in the middle. There were about ten bass boats in the quarry working tree lines with various lures. One in particular was using a pig in jig with zoom chunks. He was fishing with his son who was about 12. After a while, his son's rod bent in half and he reeled in a nice 5 pound largemouth. I worked the tree lines for about 4 hours without any success at all.
Around 1 o'clock I decided to take advantage of the rough winds on my way back. I decided to fish a cove closer to the boat launch. It is lined with boat docks and nice cover. The water was about 6 feet deep and full of crappie. Another guy also fishing with his son, caught a nice 15.5 in. 1 lb 12 oz crappie on a bobber, two split shots and live minnows. I caught one fish in the area. It was a small bass but it was better than being skunked.
I am going back tomorrow armed with bobber, splits and minnows! If the winds are calm, I may go back to the quarry. If anyone wants to join me tomorrow, I will be launching at 8am.
