  • Super slow @ Piney Point, 4/21

I hit the water around 10am (slack beginning to flood) to meet Ron who had been out there a couple of hours already. The parking lot was totally packed, and trucks with trailers were parked along the road. I had never seen that before. I ran into Dennis (Fishamajig) from TF, and he had found a nice limit for his clients. A couple of other guys that were coming in as I was heading out had also found some fish.

I putzed around the bridge for a few minutes, but nobody was home. So I started trolling. During the course of the day, I tried two different colored Stretch 25s, a Stretch 15, a deep diving Yo-zuri Crystal Minnow, a big honkin' Tony spoon with 2oz of weight, and a X-Rap XR14. No bites. The channel was packed with trollers. Lots of bait 15-20ft down in 30-40ft of water, but I didn't see many marks indicating bigger fish. If I went deeper or shallower, I didn't see nearly as much bait. Ron didn't fare any better. If he didn't catch fish, there were none there to be caught. I saw some likely croaker marks, but I couldn't find them later. It doesn't look like they're in their usual haunts yet.

I also jigged Steuart's Pier with a BKD as well as a bucktail/Gulp combo. Missed a nice hit on the bucktail, went back over the same area, and ended up snagging the bottom and losing the bucktail. Maybe it wasn't a hit after all.

Trollled back to bridge and casted a Storm Shad and jigged a BKD. Missed hits on both, so I switched to a Needlfish jig and hooked up with a fat 15" striper. At least the skunk was off.

I tried one last croaker spot. None of my other spots had marks, but I saw some here. I drifted over them quickly and couldn't find them again. I dragged a bottom rig with some shrimp anyway, but didn't have any hits. No takers for the shrimp under the bridge, either.

I called it a day at 2pm. You couldn't tell it was opening day by looking at the parking lot then. Pretty funny. Anyway, at least the weather cooperated and the company was good even if the catching wasn't.

No turkey for us, no fish for you and Ron. Good exercise though!

Sorry about the super slow fishing Bill. I think that was the case all around. At least you avoided the skunk.

Yup, barely avoided the skunk. Didn't pay much for gas, either. I was hoping the croakers would be in. Shouldn't be too much longer.
