  • PLO - Sat 4/21/12

They say the cows cruise the deep channels at PLO. Well, they weren't cruising today.

Hit the water at 0715 hrs. Cloudy, but it cleared up quickly. In fact, it was a surprisingly nice day. Blue sky and mostly sunny. Winds 5-8 mph. Temp about 70 deg. Chops were about a foot with some small gentle swells. Chops and wind picked up about 2 pm, but still good to fish. A few boats were out. No traffic problem at all on opening trophy day.

Went out past the park tip and beyond the platform. I bottom fished beyond the platform with menhaden on a tandem rig (plus squid on the 2nd hook in case croakers came by) where the water was as deep 50 feet. Threw and jigged a jighead with a peppered chartruse grub worm/twister in the deep as well. Nothing.

I went to the tip where waves crashed on the rocky shore. Threw the jighead. Nothing.

From the tip I headed back to the marina inlet crossing Cornfield Harbor while jigging a white bucktail tipped with squid in 10-15 feet of water. I also bottom fished with menhaden and squid. Nothing.

About 1330 hrs, I headed in but stopped by to troll/jig around the marina inlet. Caught (and released) an 18" striper on a blue/silver rat-L-trap. That saved the skunk on my only catch of the day

Thanks for the report, Efren. Glad to know Ron and I weren't alone for the slow catching on a nice day.

It was slow catching. When SurfDog and I were at the PLO pier, we tried calling Efren to see if he was having any better luck than us... from the pier, not rockfish, no croakers, no white perch.....

          Dave,
Yep, that's why I bottom-fished squid and jigged a bucktail. Nothing. I think it's still a bit early for large numbers to come in.

          Moc,
I think you called when I was out surveying the area just before launch (phone was in the car). Saw your message after I quit fishing. I was thinking about pedaling to the pier, but stayed around the tip only and went back to Cornfield Harbor. Anyway, I'd like to try Hog Point soon, but via shore fishing. I'd like to try when the croakers are in numbers. That way if you skunk on stripers using bws, you can get croakers.

Well, hopefully you can get us on the base, since John's badge is no good anymore. He was quite upset about that. The only saving grace was that no one caught anything at Hogs Point on Sat, so we did not miss much.
