  • St Inigoes

I fished St Inigoes this morning, hoping for the so far elusive western shore speck. Arrived at the ramp early to fog that prevented me from seeing more than 50’. For those with electronics this isn’t an issue but for the mark one eyeball navigation that I use it is a hindrance. So early I decided to try and hug a shore while still staying deep enough to find the channel edges. Before I knew it I lost sight of the shore and had no idea where I was but felt my sense of direction was strong. After pedaling longer than I thought I should have, and with no bites, I brought up Waze on my phone. The location it showed me at couldn’t possibly be correct, I was maybe 100 yards from the ramp. I brought up Google maps, same damn spot. I’d done a giant circle convinced I was heading in a straight line. Finally found shore and started trolling over the emerging grass beds.

there are a few things in life I don’t like, mother-in-law on vacation with us, ketchup on a hot dog, and Cow Nose Rays. As I cruised the shallows I started spooking the darn things left and right. I guess they’re here at the same time every year but it doesn’t make my disappointment when I first see them any less severe. To top it off I spotted a few sea nettles floating by. Alas, no specks over the grass, which is still very much in an emerging mode. At low tide I could make out every patch and sand channel. Headed to Kitts Point, other than a scenic view nothing out there, and dirty water in main Potomac.

Fog finally lifted enough I could find the edge I was looking for and started catching 16-20” stripers. Even though it was close to dead low they were cooperating and ended up with 12-15 in total.

we’ve got some warm days coming this week, hopefully that brings the specks up the Potomac.

It is easy to get disoriented in the fog. My last boat trip in 2014 was out of Sandy Point The fog under the Bay Bridge was so thick that morning that I was nervous about riding out into the channel area and encountering a large ship.

I imagine the trout will be arriving soon. Sorry to hear that the rays are already in town.

Thanks for the report Mike! I was on a recreational trip on McIntosh Run today, so no fishing. I did see several fishermen out though, who did report a good carp and catfish bite.

Thanks for the report Mike. Glad you found your way and found some fish. I hope to make it down that way soon.

I drove over the Bay Bridge in that dense fog this morning and it was disorienting. Like you said, visibility was maybe 50 feet. Aside from that it was all white. I could not see the other span of the bridge to my left, I could not see the metal support structures above me, I certainly couldn't see any land or water... all I could see was 50 feet of road straight ahead and solid white everywhere else.

The fog was super thick behind OC Saturday morning too. I couldn't see land and had to listen for traffic in the distance to tell which way my kayak was oriented.
