  • Tuesday afternoon at Solley's Cove - numbers but not much size

I launched from Solley's around 3 pm with a plan on venturing farther afield than my first trip of the year a couple of days ago. Trolling out toward bigger water, I landed a few schoolies in the same stretch where I caught some fish on Sunday. And then, not a single tug from the CG station all the way past the 695 bridge to the ship graveyard. I was trolling two rods - one with a 3" white gulp on a 1/4 oz jighead and the other with one of the few crankbaits in my tacklebox. When I turned to head back, I swapped the crankbait for a 4" chartreuse gulp on a 3/8" jighhead.

Nothing on the paddle back until I reached the same general area of my prior luck and it was fish on once again. In 30 or so minutes, I managed another dozen 11" - 14" and two more in the 18"-19" range. Trolled over to the other shoreline for a while and struck out again, then made a few final passes along the productive stretch and caught a few more schoolies and another 18"-er.

Oh, I also caught another monster catfish among the rock - it had me fooled and hopeful for at least a minute or two.

In total, I caught around 25-30 fish over a 3-hour span. All but two were landed while trolling and all but one hit the white gulp rather than the chartreuse. Color, length, jig-head weight? Who knows?

Sounds like a fun afternoon. I've noticed a steady decline in the size of shallow water rockfish I've been catching since the beginning of May. Still fun to get out there and get some pullage on the end of your rod though!

There is nothing wrong with catching 25 to 30 fish in a 3-hour trip. Those 18" to 19" fish pull hard, and even the 15" and 16" ones are fun on light tackle. The area you fished has quite a few different habitats. You are wise to work multiple areas until you find where the fish are hanging out that day. Good job.

I've seen the power of the White Gulp at Solley's....Scorchy caught a Solley's Smash right next to me while I had almost no bites.

John, thank you for reminding me about Solleys :--) I have the yak loaded and ready to go somewhere on Saturday :--)
