  • Slow Morning At Solley's

I launched from Solley's before sunrise yesterday. I followed the exact same path that I followed many times before....a very short paddle downstream to a perch "hotspot" from last year. I threw my favorite perch lures (with great confidence, at first). I did not even get a bite in this spot.

Next, I traveled upstream into and past Marley Creek. I was trolling paddletails in the same path where I had success numerous times last year. I do not have a fishfinder or GPS, but I more or less remember the areas where i was successful last year. As I approached each spot, I expected my luck to change, but still nothing...not even a bite or even a rod going down. I changed colors and jig head weights and still nothing.

I stopped to fish an area that Scorchy hipped me to last year and I caught a few small perch. At this point, I was relieved to avoid the skunk. I worked hard to find more perch, but was unable to find them willing to bite.

On the way back, I trolled the opposite shoreline...something I had never done before. I caught two small stripers on the long paddle back.

I was disappointed in the morning's catch, but I am pleased that I was able to paddle much farther than last week without aggravating my healing shoulders.

The launch was dirtier than I remember and there were more crabbers than I remember also. I do not recall if I was fishing Solley's at this time last year...once again, I wish I had started logging my trips into a spreadsheet like John recommends. It would be nice to see if I was fishing Solley's in late August last year. My recollection is that most of my success there last year was in the late Spring and early Summer.

Do you ever head downstream from Solley's? I've only been there once, at the end of October last year, and I caught some very fat, strong stripers downstream of the launch. The seawall in front of the old army depot (almost directly across from the launch) was one of the more productive spots - there are lots of pilings from what I assume is a collapsed pier. I picked up a few other fish from various spots along the shorelines as I made my way downstream to see the ship graveyard (which was the main reason I visited this spot).

Nope. I have never fished any further downstream than Thomas Point when launching at Solley's. I find the upstream waters to be more aesthetically pleasing...it seems to get more and more industrial going downstream. But...I am glad that you mentioned it, Dave. Before I knew about Solley's, I used to launch at Fort Armistead and had some great days fishing...for some reason, if I am catching fish, I am willing to forgive a little dystopian industrial scenery. The fish do not appear to be where I expect them to be this year, so I need to explore new waters. Thinking about it now, I am surprised that I never traveled that direction, if only to see the ship graveyard.

Way to get out there Rob and glad to hear the shoulders are on the mend. On days like that, we appreciate those two small stripers to end the day.

Thank you Nick. Agreed, 100%. Even the first white perch (almost comically small) felt like a big victory after a couple hours without a bite. It is funny how much my mood can change with just one fish (or even a bite)...all of a sudden, my hope was renewed and I casted and worked my spinner with more confidence.

Mark has encouraged me to enjoy just being on the water and I really do try to remember this...but there is a primal reward system that seems to get triggered when I catch a fish.

It's an amazing sport this fishing to which some have been gifted.
