A few days ago I launched at Jonas Green Park. This is my first year of fall kayak fishing - and was my first time fishing in water deeper than 10 feet. I had a good trip landing 10 stripers and 1 over-achieving perch. Six of the stripers were over 19” two 24” and one 25". These larger fish came relatively far off the shoreline, I was closer to the channel markers and much farther out than I have fished all year. Most of my catches came on a Yo-Zuri 3D Inshore Fingerling – 4” Bone color. I bought this lure thinking it would be fun to throw around structure in shallow water – it’s a suspending bait and has some twitch action – anyway I thought it looked like the bait I was seeing and that’s why I used it. For some reason they keyed in on it - it even caught the perch. First time I had a crankbait out fish paddle tails. The largest fish came on a 3/4 oz bucktail.

Nice work Nick. The area where you caught most of those fish has produced a lot of good catches for me over the years. It used to be an excellent April spot. But since DNR won't let us fish for stripers in April, it is off limits then.John Veil

Thanks for sharing Nick, nice fish. Every published fishing report lately preaches the same thing... menhaden are flushing out of the rivers following channel edges and deeper contours, and the rockfish are waiting at river mouths to intercept them. Sounds like you proved that to be correct.Dave

Nick, thank you for the post. Watching you escalate your fishing game has been fascinating and a lot of fun. Pretty soon, people will have to stop saying that you have the "lucky stick" and give you credit for putting in the work, as well as being open-minded and willing to try new waters, lures, techniques, etc.
I am happy for you brother. I think we both learned to troll in shallow water with John. That was a game-changer for me. I recall catching 6 or 7 stripers that day and thinking it couldn't get any better than that...but it has. Over the last couple of years, I have been fortunate enough to record some "firsts" (like first pickerel, first Severn Slam, etc.) as well as PB's for stripers and specks.
The community of angler's on this forum is outstanding and I am grateful to all of you that have helped me become a better kayak angler.

I fished near the mouth of the Severn this morning visiting both the north and south shores. I trolled in 4 to 6 ft water. I had a great 30 mins of catching and 3.5 other hours of paddling. During those 30 mins, I had a hard strike that broke my line at the leader knot. Once I retied, I got a fat 18" striper. A few minutes later I had two lines go down at the same time with 22" stripers on both. Shortly after that, I caught a 23" striper. After that, the fish moved or stopped feeding because the tide stopped moving. The rest of the day was just a lot of paddling and hoping.
I trolled primarily 3" and 4" paddletails, but after reading Nick's report, I tried two different crankbaits on one rod. Neither of them was touched today.John Veil
