I launched into Eastern Bay at 1:10 pm (low tide was 1:44pm). I immediately went to an area near the launch that has good bottom structure. I was trolling two bucktails on 1/8 oz jig heads.
I was excited as I approached the area but I made a pass over with no hits. I made a few more passes over the area without any hits and I decided to head to the far shoreline where John V first taught me how to troll. By now, the tide was moving again.
I made one complete pass with no hits at all. A couple times when I pulled my lines in, they were dragging grass. I decided to put a pearl 4” zman on a 3/16 oz jig head to get a little deeper in the water column. Within 30 seconds, rod goes down hard. It was a feisty 18” striper on the pearl with 3/16 jig head. After re-setting in the water, a minute goes by and boom…down goes rod. This time a 22” again on the same pearl lure. I couldn’t paddle more than 20 yards without hooking up again. This happened 8 times in a very short period of time. Not once did the electric chicken get hit. A few of the stripers were over 20".
I was about to switch the second rod to another 3/16oz with 4” pearl…it was working so well, I wanted to double down on that combo. By this time, the winds had shifted or gotten stronger. I was having difficulty switching lures and the water was getting quite a bit rougher. I wanted to keep fishing, but I decided to head back to the launch. It was a challenging paddle back to the launch…it probably took me 3x longer to cross back over and it was a fun paddle back.
The overwhelming majority of the time yesterday, I was not getting hits and I was second guessing everything I was doing. When I found the fish it was very exiting and fast paced…I looked at my wearable and my heart rate had gone up twenty bpm. Yesterday was one of those days that re-affirmed to me that I need to spend more time on the water….
