  • St. Inigoes Landing report

After briefly considering a quick trip to Va. Beach to fish in and around Lynnhaven for a couple of days, I thought better of it. (Opening weekend of cobia season? High tidal coefficient? Bad wind? Meh.)

The easier option was to stay local and do a day trip for the first time this year, so I went to Inigoes. I started working the edge of the grass bed with a Zara Spook, a Trout Trick, and tried an old Johnson Silver Minnow to see if I could replicate the success I had on drum in similar conditions on Oregon Inlet a few weeks ago. No dice at first, but I saw an osprey diving at a natural ambush point where the bed stuck out. It was toward the end of the outgoing so I concentrated on the soft plastic and quickly got a chunky 19" trout I saw chasing bait. That was followed with a dink striper and lots of short strikes, then the tide went slack and that was it.

I trolled all the way to Potter Creek with plastics and an X-rap. All I got was a bluefish and tired legs, but that's okay. I think bluefish are delicious.

Coming back my hopes of fishing the grass were shot. There were jetskiers going full Danny McBride on top of it and so much had broken loose from the incoming that it was unfishable. I headed back to the ramp and was greeted by the same ding-dongs on jet skis going back and forth to the beach to pick up friends and deliberately throwing huge wakes. But no complaints. It was a great day and nice to see the trout settling in. There were tons of sea nettles so the salinity is looking good.

Thanks for the report. Fishing has been tough down there from all the intel I've gathered. I haven't fished down there yet this year and likely won't until early fall.

I'm surprised how much the grass bed has moved towards the shoreline there. Hopefully it burns off when water temps rise.
