  • Beautiful Evening on the Magothy

I fished a few hours before sunset with my son on the Magothy this evening.

    I caught over 15 of these on a 1/16 oz. hand tied calf-tail jig-spinner:

My son did better catching more than two dozen white perch.

But he didn't catch one of these:

What an enjoyable evening on the water.

The perch are definitely making a better showing this year than last year.

Nice going Mark, glad you both got out for the pillage. Where is the fly rod?

      John,

      Thanks John.

I had a 5 wt. fly rod with me. I caught a couple of white perch on a size 2 peacock bass fly I had tied for my trip to the Everglades last month. I figured it would work, and it did. Pink and blue...imagine that. But by far, the jig spinner was more effective.

Adam got one on a bendback. He caught the rest on a Rooster Tail.

The typical perch formula was at play -- calm water surface, shade/dark water and near structure.

      We left them biting.

It's good news that the perch are back this year at their common haunts and more plentiful than last year.

Mark—good job on the perch! I was fishing off a dock on the Magothy last night—a beautiful evening. Lots of bait fish on the surface. I got a few small perch. Saw several large CNR. The local crabbers (both pro and recreational) have been doing well in Magothy so far this year, too.

          Thank you.

Yes...bait fish slapping the surface were prevalent which was another good sign. Occasionally, there would be a big splash near them. I suspected a striper and I cast toward that area but I never connected.

Hi Mark. I am glad that you and your son had such a beautiful evening to fish together and you both caught fish. I think that yellow perch is absolutely beautiful too. My dad's fishing days are over, but I cherish the memories of fishing with him.

My experience so far this year is that the white perch seem to be back. I have caught more already this year than I did the entire year last year

              Thank you, Rob.

Like you, in only a few perch outings this year I believe I have caught as many as all last year. I don't keep precise catch records so I don't know for sure. But the perch action has been outstanding thus far in 2023.

Yellow perch really are some beautiful fish. At Solleys on Sunday morning, a couple of guys in a john boat were catching them left and right, including a couple of 14"ers in the cooler. They got chased off once the Fathers' Day boat traffic made their spot treacherous and I never got to try my luck there for the same reason, though they were fishing with shrimp so doubt I would have had what the yellow perch were looking for anyway.

On the other hand, I did manage a dozen white perch - a few over 11" - and could have doubled that number easy if I hadn't trolled all over creation looking for rock.
