Flats Fishing Report (04/29/2012)

Went out on the flats again today. Landed 11 rockfish all over 20" except 2 around 14". Although the quantity was less then usual the quality of fish was much better. At 14:50 hours caught 3 rockfish measuring 24" in three consecutive casts. It was a blast. Then about 5 minutes later caught a 20" and 22" with consecutive casts.

Wind died down and so did the bite. The wind picked back up at 15:50 hours but in the opposite direction and caught to more 23" and 24" in about 5 casts (24" picture below).

It was a good day, but still have not landed one over 30".

Nice fish, thanks for the update planning on fishing there tomorrow morning. Though it looks like the winds may be kicking up but by the sound of it may trigger the bite.

From best I can tell the purple highlighted area (see map) is where I was today. There is a small channel with a break in the grass (4-7 feet deep). The rockfish seem to patrol the grass line north and south side of channel. I seem to have best results in afternoon incoming tide. Second image are the lures I have been having success with (picked up at Dicks on sale for $6.58 for both). The Rapala lure has caught 20 fish over the weekend on the flats. I had to upgrade the hooks to 2/0 red since the ones that came with the lure broke and bent fighting the mid-20 range rocks.

Very nice. That's a great looking rockfish there.

Those lures are very similar to the ones Yak Fish was having success with last week.
