  • Kayak Crabbing In Search of the Swamp Crab 10-06-2023

I was invited to go on a kayak crabbing trip with a fellow kayaker, Jack. He wanted to take me to a swamp crabbing location where he catches crabs. He said that the crabs in this shallow water have a veracious appetite and will eat out all of your bait fast., so I was urged to bring extra bait. It was less than a 2 mile paddle to the crabbing grounds. About a third of the way was so shallow that you could not use my Hobie Mirage Drive Peddles or Bixby motor. You had to paddle! It was a work out with all of the wait of crabbing gear to transport. As soon as legal time started I put my trotline down and I immediately started catching crabs. Jack was also catching nice crabs in his traps. Nice protected area from a lot of boat traffic. At the end of the day, we were happy to go home with crabs and jack also had a 25 inch rockfish! I got a bushel for my efforts.

Nice trip. Can you tell if there is a taste difference between bay river vs swamp crabs?
