  • Carp today

Cliff and I went out for a relaxing day of carp fishing on the gunpowder. We got a couple of good hours in before the wind really started picking up. We landed one nice carp and a few catfish before the wind made it too difficult. There were also some runs that got off unfortunately. We had a few small lures so we headed along the shoreline to catch some perch. By the end I had a 5 species day: carp, catfish, wp, yp and bluegill. As usual, the carp put up quite a fight. I was holding on for dear life as it ran around the kayaks. It got a little hairy at the end as the circling lead to wrapping around a paddle and nearly snagging but Cliff was able to net it before snapping a pic. Funny enough, we got another take as we were in the process of taking the pic, no carp, just another catfish.

In all, Cliff and I had a nice time out on the water. Too bad I couldn't get him his first carp

It ended up being 29", one inch short of a citation. When we saw it we were sure it was much bigger because of how fat it was, but the measuring tape doesn't lie.

Thanks for the heads up. I just looked at the leaderboard. I guess I did make it I never really checked it out, but I caught one last year in June which hung over the sides of the Outback, which is 33" so it was at least 34" but I didn't measure.

Thanks for the heads up. Now I have some records to shoot for!

Nice carp. What did you catch it on? I would like to catch some of those big ones myself, especially fom my yak. Did you launch out of Dundee marina?

It was caught on homemade bait, which is a combo of cornmeal, flour and jello mix. If you do a search, I posted the recipe before at some point.
We launched right out of Dundee. The weeds will be getting pretty thick in there over the next month. They are already coming up pretty thick.

That carp was a fatty. We probably would have lost it if we were not fishing with braid. It did all it could to tangle itself around the anchor lines and the yaks. Somehow it was brought up to the boat untangled. Carp never give up and fight like hell. I have to thank Yak_fish for taking the time to cook up the bait and for sharing his knowledge with me. It was a great day out on the water and I look forward to fishing that area again. Maybe a little early morning top water action along the grass if the tide is up. Bass can't resist a Heddon Tiny Torpedo.
