  • 15 lines out and caught a...

Skunk! came out of the patuxent yesterday morning 7 am on a charter. Had the yak on the roof of my car thinking if we limited out early I would put in and maybe head up to Brooms Island area. Didn't work out that way. Stayed out til 4, fished around Hoopers Light back and forth, back and forth. disapointed, on the way home stopped at Roy's R's in Solomons for a roast beef, man those are good.

Still a good time to see a bunch of fellas I only see twice a year fishing. Why mess up good story telling time with catching a bunch of fish, right.

Should have taken that skunk home with you. We caught it today trolling Sandy point point to Bloody point and back. We were not part of the MSSA tourney but it sounded like it was a pretty slow weekend for everybody.

They had a pretty steady stream of fish being weighed in at Sandy Point, but nobody was really killing them.

      Transition fishing

Salt water fishing is in a transition period- the trophy striper season is winding down and the warming waters of summer are headed our way- it will be spotty fishing- good days and not so good- looks to me like fresh water offers a more stable platform for success right now-

That is exactly what the captain said. He thought that the warmer than usual temps had the big fish in here earlier and they are for the most part already gone. He did have 3 keepers the day before and he thought that was fortunate. He was talking to the other boats while we were out and most had zip or 1 fish.

It was a beautiful day though, wouldn't trade that for yard work if you know what I mean.

Haven't been out fishing with any one from the forum, looking forward to the M&G this month, I will be the guy with a kayak. LOL

They are not just moving out, they are still moving in, still staging for the spawn, done with the spawn, still in the rivers, in the bay, down deep eating mayworms and peelers, and moving out all at the same time.

It sounds like the flip flopping weather and rain last week has made the fish do everything at once. I caught a rockfish (male) off Randle Cliffs last week with sea lice-it was fresh in from the ocean, I saw fish with roe caught all through the middle bay this week-did not spawn yet, I heard of lots of rockfish being caught in the Potomac this past weekend, some fat with roe and some big females that had no roe- they had spawned or were ready to spawn, I heard of fish moving out to the ocean in the lower bay.

I think the reality is this weeks fishing sucked for just about all of us that were rockfish fishing and everybody has their excuse why they had no fish. Judging by what I saw none of the excuses are 100% correct.

Should have made it more clear, I dont think the whole stock has moved out. I meant Some are starting to move out, or Some have moved out. Only I dont have another chance to fish the Chesapeake again this spring to try and get em.

Sorry, I think that post sounded much harsher than I meant it. I'm still pissed off from fishing the tournament all weekend with not one fish to show for it. Trolling on a boat for 10 hours solid per day for 2 days without catching fish has got to be one of the most boring things I will ever do

Nice work on the 44" Striper! That's one hell of a fish and I'm jealous.

No I have not been around that area much. A buddy of mine has fished Brooms Island for years and told me it holds good numbers of w/perch. I am not even sure what time of the year he was talking about, but it gave me a starting point. Is Island Creek a good place to launch from?

In the fall most of the tidal creeks hold pearch. If you google Patuxent Water Trails the Maryland DNR has all the launches listed. You can cet some nice hardheads off the mouth of St. Leonard's creek but watch out for boat traffic in the mornings.
