  • Clark's Landing Solomons Island 05/28/2012

John "SurfDog" wanted to fish on Monday and Mike "Grady Black" was going to show all of his his free kayak launch spot on the Patuxent in the Solomon's Island vicinity. I was not sure if I could make this trip, but as luck would have it, my schedule worked out, so I met SurfDog at 4:30am at the 7-11 on 301 near the Walmart. We then met up with Grady Black at the Wawa not too far from there. We all met the rest of the gang around 6:40am at the Solomon's Island Ramp. Don "Shield", Keith "Wingman" and Keven Fry was there. The six of us followed Grady Black to Clarks Landing. It was a street that just ended at a boat ramp. It was a free launch. I did notice allot of boats crabbing in that area.

We all unloaded our yaks and parked on the side of the road, including Keith's trailer. Today was going to be a hot one with temperatures predicted to reach 90 degrees. The skies were clear, the water was calm and the winds were light. It was making up for a beautiful day. The last time that I came down to this area, the fishing was non-existent. Not so today, but not what we wanted, but it was fun regardless. Within 10 minutes of launching my yak I caught a white perch near the mouth of the cove near to shore on a white 2 inch paddle tail grub on a 1/8 ounce round jig head. 15 minutes later I saw breaking fish so I went over to that area and casted my same grub into the area and proceeded to land 6 in to 11 inch baby rockfish... one right after another. After I got tired of catching baby rockfish, I crossed the channel into another cove and caught a small spot. I continued towards the Solomons bridge into another cove on the south eastern side of the sand bar and caught more small rocks. In the cove, I caught tons of baby reds and two toadfish. While throwing my grub close to a bulkhead, I landed to keeper perch 11incher and a 12 incher.

It was a beautiful day, everyone caught fish, and we got off the water by midday, to beat the heat.

The International Association of Machinists have the W.W. Wimpinsinger Placid Harbor Education Center at Clark's Landing. I have attended six week-long training courses at the center over the past three decades- lots of crabbing in the harbor- lots of small stuff- wp, baby stripers, small channel bass chasing minnows and glass shrimp in the grass-

You did very well in terms of species caught. I enjoy catching a variety of different species.

great report. we used to handline crab from a boat up close to the shore across from that ramp. Gets deep quick over there. Never took longer than 2 hours for a good bushel.

Hey does anyone know of the land at the Patuxent right on the right of the mouth of the creek when you are leaving the ramp? Is it just public land that anyone can use? I was curious since there were other campers and kayakers and boaters on the beach there? They did everything from stretching, taking a break, and setting up a tent.... not sure if anyone can use that land that beaches there...anyone knows?

add croaker to that list, no spot on that one

it is a nice place with easy access to the river and the sand bar on the other side is a good place to stop and stretch

Martin--That piece of land is Myrtle Point Park. It used to be free, but I think there's a charge now. It's a long haul from the parking lot to the beach, and the path isn't conducive to yak carts. I think there are stairs. However, the little cove by the beach area is a good place for spot. It's not a bad place to shore fish. Also, wineberries grow in the park, and they are delicious. My wife and I pick several gallons there every summer. They usually ripen early in July, but I need to check to see if they're running early this year.
