  • BB 3 June

Got to the BB at 630 am to fish the outgoing tide Sunday morning. Lots of wind out of the west made for a very rough day on the water...that coupled with the high pressure, frontal passage, and turbid water made for quite a tough day. Between pops and I we got 6 but all quite small. Lost one that was probably keeper size but it wouldn't have mattered much--still very slow. None of the boats or charters near us were catching either...seems a far cry from the place I was at 2 weeks ago catching 40+! Such is the way of fishing.

On a more positive note: my dad picked up the hobie sail kit and we had a blast with it on our outbacks...just wish it wasn't so pricey.

Yeah it does...you can cruise around at around 4 mph steady with a 10 mph wind...definitely requires a few small blocks available from hobie but not included in the kit

I just picked a sail up also. I used it for the first time today on a Pro Angler. It was very windy, but I think the PA is just too heavy for it. I will return it if I can and if not I will list it for sale on here and CL. It’s definitely made for the lighter yaks like the Outback or Revo.

Maybe next weekend the bite will be better. Of course our June M&G at PLO is Saturday.

BTW, I was going to BB this past Sat pm, but changed my mind.

          Thanks for the report.

Having not much sailing experience myself, I would venture to say that most of hobie's yaks (with the exception of the tandem island, which can really haul) are just that--kayaks that can sail a bit. The sail is inefficient, the mast is very bendy (mostly to add a factor of safety really), and the Pro Angler in particular does not have a big enough rudder to counteract its large profile. I can see the PA being sluggish on the water...the outback slapped around a bit for me (as usual). I think the sail is best used as a supplement to pedaling...you really feel a difference and it can be quite useful on long treks to fishing haunts.
