good stuff! - i've been trying to figure out how to get some bass fishing in myself.

my favorite bait was always culprit-brand purple and/or black worms (ribbin-tailed) especially thru afternoon or any 'slow' bite. i like the ribbontail because it makes for a high profile bait with lots of movement, but not a lot of volume - easy for a fish to inhale. i traditionally fished them with 1-3 small split shot depending on wind/depth. the shakey head is kind of new for me. i got some last year for the 1st time and really like them.

Every year anglers post photos on Tidalfish of a few striped bass that were caught that showed a similar upper jaw structure. From what I read there, it is a known but uncommon genetic trait. Perhaps our MKF resident fisheries biologists can shed some light on this.

Awesome fish, Matt. Patience paid off. Maybe I should try being patient some time.

I've seen striped bass and bluefish with deformed upper jaws, which is a birth defect. Those fish don't usually live to get very big, but every now and then one does. I guess if there's tons of food, they can still get enough to eat.

MD is over 21"... I kinda like how MD does it because it doesn't require you to take the fish to a tackle shop to have it weighed, which would most likely kill the fish. Snap a Photo and release.

I don't think that it was a "pug nosed" like a striper.
It looks look a bass that had it's upper jaw torn off when it was smaller and it healed enough for the fish to survive.
You occasionally see trout like that on the catch and release streams.
