  • 04 July at Mattawoman, Awesome / aggravating

Only had the morning to fish but drove down to Mattawoman and launched from Slavins around 0545. Headed upstream and started by throwing a black buzzbait without any action. After about 20 minutes of nothing I switched over to a white horny toad knock off and started working back into the spatterdock. This is when the aggravation began... Over the next 20 minutes I missed my 1st 10 or so blow ups. Then the line snapped on a snakehead that jumped clear out of the water to flip me the fin, this was doubly aggravating because I had just respooled my reels the night before. A few more swing and misses and I finally landed my 1st fish, 1.5lb bass. Then another string of missed bites, more broken lines (f-ing line!) and missed opprotunities topped off by a 30+ inch snakehead taking my bait, flying out of the water and then heading straight to the bottom and away followed by a snap of my line and a cuss people a mile away probably heard.

Then things got turned around a bit. Swapped out my reel of new line with a spare I had brought along that was packed with braid and went to town. Still missed a bunch of fish, but landed my 1st 2 snakeheads and 6 or 8 bass. Kept throwing the white frog till I had to leave at 10 and while the topwater bite had slowed down once the sun really came out, it never completely shut off. Kept a wieghless tube rigged on a spinning rod and when the fish missed the frog, sometimes multiple times, I would cast the tube out and slowly twitch it through the strike zone. Managed to pick a few fish up this way. All in all, an awesome day watching wakes come chasing my frogs down followed by big blow ups! Had to leave the fish still biting but I will be back soon with some new line and some more frogs! I'll add some pictures later

Nice I figured that was you after reading your report. I saw you pretty far back in that grass on my way back to the landing.
I missed a few fish throwing into the thick weeds, but I was stickin them with the frogs along the edges. I may be goin again saturday mornin to try my luck again.

Yup, I was a ways back in there with the bugs and frogs. Must have had a couple hundred small beetles and 2 frogs hitching a ride at one point :/ I wont be able to make it this weekend or next but I really want to find another time to make it back down there!

Chimo - Sounds like an action filled morning in spite of your line problems. Was it mono that was breaking on you? Was the line breaking near the lure? What pound test? IMHO, spatterdock is one of the toughest weeds to fish thru.

          Howard,
It was breaking right at the knot most of the time but also broke somewhere else with the big snakehead. The spatterdock was tough but there was a big section that was dying down and thinning out that wasnt too bad.

What brand of mono was it? I've had really bad luck with Silver Thread. Regardless, seeing big wakes like that is awesome and one of my favorite fishing experiences.

14lb Bass pro signature series monofilament. I might have understood if I had been breaking the fish off after they got wrapped around vegatation but multiple times on the hookset is a problem. I have some 15 lb P-line Flouro-Clear co-polymer line I am going to try swapping it out with. I have liked it for leader material so we will see.

Well, at least you got some blowup action. I have yet to get a blowup. The snakeheads must be afraid of me. I will try for them later this summer. Can you provide a picture of the frog that was successful (kind of) for you?

Heres a link Moc. http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shop...t/90804/102712 I would probably use the Zoom Horny Toad or Stanley Ribbits but I'm a cheap sob and like to use my Basspro discount I think any of that style frog will work fine
