  • Severn River 7/4

Foursteps24, Metroman, and I launched from Jonas Green at around 5:00 am. Foursteps24 and Metroman wanted to run their trot lines for crabs and I wanted to do a little fishing and then set some traps for crabs. But Metroman had motor issues and made an early exit... LOL. The weather was beautiful that morning, little to no winds and too early for the Severn River Rec boaters to act like jerks! LOL

My game plan was to find a portion of the submerged old Severn bridge and try to jig a BKD for some Stripers. And if that failed then try a Specialized bait lil' bunker spoon/teaser fly rig, I used the lil bunker spoon as the weight and then dropper loop to the fly. It was weird because as I was paddling directly in front of the pier My FF was showing a relatively flat bottom... In my head I'm like this can't be right. So I drop my BKD... the bottom felt soft. So I paddled around the vicinity then I saw where I went from 25 ft to 15 ft and there it was! I dropped my BKD and started to jig... I could immediately feel the concrete and also felt my jig head fall into little crevices where I got hung up a couple times, but I didn't lose any lures. I caught some little puny Stripers... I mean like 10-12". LOL Then the craziest thing happened... a damn White Perch hit the BKD. And I ain't talking bout foul hooking it... the sucker had it in it's mouth! LOL It was hilarious. It was about 12" or so. So since I knew that perch were holding there as well, I switched over to my Specialized bait rig... KILLED THEM. Every drop I was getting hits in a matter of seconds. Foursteps24 came to see what I was doing and we were just laughing at how quick they were hitting it. I would get doubles of WP, doubles of Stripers, One of each... it was crazy! But as soon as I got off that piece of structure... nothing. The guys on the pier didn't look like they were doing much of anything...

Foursteps24 killed the crabs... he caught just about a bushel if not one. I tried the traps for the first time and caught a whopping 3 keeper crabs. One was HUGE though. It was the biggest in the crate of course! LOL We got off the water around 12 or so. I wanted to try the spot again and catch a few more WP, but by this time the Severn fools were out in full force by boat and jet ski with no regard to anyone else on the water... I didn't even feel like fooling with them. All in all it was a great day on the water. I released all my fish and didn't get to taste any of the crabs... LOL

On another note I was able to finally put my new paddle in the water... A Werner Camano. I was able to talk my wife into getting me one for Father's day. My God I have no idea why I didn't invest in a good paddle sooner!!! This thing is super crazy light and I had no problem getting the Big Game Barge moving! Normally I get off the water feeling like I spent the day bench pressing. LOL This definitely reduced my fatigue and recovery.

Yep...I had a corroded connector that ended my day before it even started. Glad it reared its ugly head before I set any gear out. I'm fixing it today, will be back at it soon enough.

Nice going there guy. Ah heheheheh

Nice work jigging up the perch. Were you in target range from the guys fishing on the pier? Sorry to year about the connector, Langston.

They could have hit me if they really slung it... but they would have to cast over the fence and get hung up and more than likely lose their rig! LOL Most guys don't cast directly in the channel because of the snags of the sunken structure. But there are some guys that test it.. I kept an eye over there to make sure no one got any ideas...LOL I try to be as respectful to the pier guys as possible... I know how I used to feel when boats had all the water they wanted but had to come close to the pier! LOL I give them their space... they give me mine.

nice james, there is another pile of bridge debris on the other side in line with the end of the rock jetty about 75 yds south of the bridge. talked to Jay as he was unloading but was heading to greenbury point whacked the hell out of them out there! was using a 1/8 oz jig i tied with some chartruse bucktail on a spinner with a 2" power bait curly tail on the hook. same mix of wp and stripers no keepers and some dink croakers. i didnt keep any but moc had a nice stringer of big wp. moc, shield and i stuck a few around the point in the hacketts but the best bite was up on the rocks around the inside of the point.

I'll have to check it out John! I am debating if I am gonna go out early tomorrow before work with Metroman... I'm on the fence. I am really surprised at the lack of the Croakers this time of the year. Even down in VA they say they aren't really big in size and we don't have the numbers we had last year. You guys still going to DE tomorrow?

no back to the base, too hot for DE and with the full moon DE bay will be really moving, meeting mike at wawa at 0500 if you want to go. yeah croakers and keeper rock are in short supply for the near shore guys and i dont feel like bobbing around the shipping channel for larger stripers
