  • Wicomico River Dead Crabs

I was out on the Wicomico river yesterday, a couple hours before dark the white perch were biting small spoons, I was really after a few croakers. I noticed a lot of good size crabs dead floating on top the water it looked as though something in the water was killing them it had to be 100 or more crabs just in the are of the Chaptico Wharf.

        Dead crabs

If there has been a large algae bloom recently in the area, the die off and decomposition of the algae will cause a lack of oxygen, thus creating an oxygen depleated dead zone. This occurs as the algae settles. This type situation is the result. It sounds alot like that. Fish, being more mobile, sometimes move from those type zones. However, sometimes even the fish are killed. Not saying that this is for sure the reason for the dead crabs, but it sounds alot like the cause.
