  • OC & Mayo Report

Started off without my yak up to OC with the wife on Thursday. Friday morning, she went shopping and I sat at the inlet watching others fish from the bulkhead. One of the guys there said that one of the boats drifting by had caught a big fish but that he did not know what was caught. When they drifted by again, I raised my hands in air so they would hold up the fish, which they did. Big Blue. Ask if I wanted it, so I scrambled over the rail down on the rocks and they pulled up and handed me this Blue still kicking. I thanked them and climbed back up to the street level. On ice 15 min later. Note, it was caught while they were live-lining a spot. I estimated the fish 10-12lbs, wife says 15 lb. Although some don't like to eat Blues especially large ones, kept on ice, eaten quick, good stuff in my opinion. We baked it and fed the family. Back to town on Sat.

Sunday fished Mayo with my son & nephew. Started 7:30 am, caught bunches of perch 9-12" range. My son caught 1 puppy drum on a silver spoon at the riprap while scewing around on the beach there at the launch. For the first time, we had a homeowner waiving at us from her bay window in her million dollar house. I waived back. I guess you can see where I am going with this, but I didn't at first. So, she cracks her door open and hollers at us to move away. She closed the door and we kept fishing around the dock which was a typical dock, sticking out into the bay in front of her house with a boat on lift, 2 jet skis on a lift, sail boat on a lift and 2 hobies sitting up in the front yard. At this point we havent touched, climbed onto or hit anything with lead because it was all up in the air. We have no radios to bother anyone and kinda moving around in silence while fishing. So then, her husband comes out and asked (told) us to get moving along. I did not want to give kayak fishing a bad name but thought that I should stand up just a little. I asked what the issue was as that we wern't screamming around on jet skis or causing any noise or other problems that I could see. He just told us to keep moving waiving his hands at us with a nasty disposition and anger in his tone and that there were many other docks for us to go fish around. I said that we were sorry for obstructing his wife's view of the bay and we would be moving along. Just then don't you know it, my nephew, who could not hear the exchange cast a woody's spinner on top of the deck and it got stuck. This guy never saw that, as I kept him busy while the lurer was retieved. I said have a nice day and we went down to the next dock. Through out the day we had many pleasant conversations with home owners, most want to know if the fishing was good, what are you catching kind of exchanges. One guy came down his steps asked what lures we were using. I pulled onto the beach to show him. Most people are very nice folks around the bay and I have no problem moving along if I bother somebody, but I will not tolerate being told to get moving. Ironic thing was that back a while ago, I caught my first perch citation right under that guys dock. Be nice and curtious, most will do the same in return is what I have experienced.

Sorry for the long ramble, better to let it hang out here on the forum than a picture in the paper of a kayak fisheman sticking a pole up a guy's ars.

So what experience's have you all encountered out there?

Now that's a taylor Blue. You would think with having such a fancy, expensive house and toys those folks would have something better to do than to care what your doing, they're life would be no different. Just shows that having money doesn't equal happiness or peace of mind.

sounds like you handled the situation very well. as i understand it - the state owns the water up to the tide line, they own their pier and are liable for it.

They do not own the water so you are doing no wrong. Make sure you do not touch the dock/ anything that is their "property". You have every right to fish public water. Next time you have an encounter like this ask that individual if you can borrow their phone to report them for harassment. Its also quite fun to let them know their riparian rights as defined by the state of Maryland. Rule #1 The State owns the land under the water, and the United States has an overriding interest in preserving public navigation. To make this clear. Private property owners have the right to water access from their property ( their dock or pier) The state owns the land under their dock. The Government owns the water. Good luck getting me to move if the fish are under that pier.

Sad to say, this is too common in these parts......far cry from our place in Canada where folks we had just met heard it was my daughters b-day and came over an hour later with a freshly baked cake.

          As for the Bluefish.....15lbs easy

thought about sticking around the dock just to make a point to the owner but having my nephew and 12 yr old son along, just seem like the point I should be making should be for their benifit. So, we moved on and i did some explaining to them later. Also, it would have ruined my piece of mind the rest of the day if I had let him win by me getting angry over it in front of them.

Mango you did the right thing under the circumstance, maybe they should take up fishing as a hobby to help them relax some and occupy their time so they stop worrying about people on the water fishing.

I have had that happen. I tend to just keep fishing, as if they were not there and ignoring their rant. They generally can't take that and don't know how to handle it.

Children around i probably would have done the same. By myself, different story. Only in anne arundel county do people feel so entitled. Personally i have never had a problem, maybe it is the facial hair.

I've had similar things happen, once some guy in Holland Point swore my buddy and I were stealing crabs from his pots and not really yak fishing. He didn't get it when I explained that I would turtle if I tried to pull up his full size pots and empty them.

I think you did the right thing under the circumstances. I tend to have a short fuse with arrogant people, they get one nice explanation and then it's no holds barred. I will agree that when my son is with me I am a lot more forgiving.
