  • Duck, NC Day #1. Too Windy for Kayak Fishing

Day one of fishing in Duck, NC.

We are staying right on the sound and it was too windy today for kayak fishing. So my son and I hit the surf for the last hour of daylight today.

Not much activity. The only bite I had produced this new species for me.

The body was the size of a frisbee. It wanted a piece of shrimp.

My son was fishing a 1/4 ounce jig with a Gulp shrimp on it and had something almost rip the rod out of his hands. But the fish managed to not get hooked.

That my friend is a Sting Ray. At the end of that tail is a three inch barb that you don't want to ever have hit you. I have a three inch gash in my foot from one of these fellows I stepped on in my younger years.

    Regards,

I just got back from a week in Duck. I'm pretty sure we took all the skunk back with us so you will have a great fishing trip there.

If you get the chance take the kayaks down to Oregon inlet and launch from the public ramp at the marina. there is a nice slough (Prop Slough) that runs behind the Coast Guard station filled with spec's and reds. Cast Gulps along the reeds by the station and you should catch them. There is also a real nice slough sound side on the other end of the bridge that holds fish. Just be careful the current runs fast on that side of the bridge. Trust me you don't what to be anywhere around the bridge when the outgoing current is ripping thru there. We made a bad play last year and almost got swept out the inlet.

The sound behind Duck is brackish water and i think you need a NC fresh water licence to fish it. I don't know what the fishing is like back there.
