  • PLO - Saturday 8/4/12

Camped PLO Friday Night through Sunday morning.

Traffic was very bad coming down from the mountains of Virginia Friday night so despite us leaving at 4 pm we barely got into the campgrounds before they lock the gate at ten pm. Gotta love the friday evening rush...

Friday night we hit the pier under the nights late with gulps and spoons. Had a few small takes no fish landed. Noticed a school of 14"-18" Rockfish sitting in the shady spots under the pier but they had total lockjaw. After watching several gentlemen lacking in language skills bucket some 10" red drum we decided to call it a night.

Saturday 7 am to 11 am - Only time not blowing 20+ Knots out of the SSE

We started launching at the pet beach and right away caught several small redfish and rockfish. Nothing bigger then 10" but still a blast to see redfish and rock schooled together.

We made our way out to the oyster beds in 18-22 ft of water and started jigging. Lots os small takes and several toadfish later we decided to move to more productive waters.

I trolled two bucktails down to the creek inlet on the northside of PLO State Park picking up several short rockfish on the way.

We found a nice tideline at the creek mouth and right away started picking up rockfish to 23" and bluefish to 21". The action stayed pretty good for about 45 mins landing at least 10-15 fish each.

The rest of the weekend was a total blowout with winds no less then 20 knots out of the SSE which made unsafe kayaking conditions.

To add insult to injury late in the afternoon on Saturday a large school of breaker rockfish and blues showed up off the beach in the 3-4 ft white caps.. On the bright side i smoked a fine cigar and watched the seagulls feast on the baitfish running for there lives.

Sorry conditions weren't better, but at least you had one good day. Sounds like a trip to PLO might be in order. Thanks for the info.

We definitely hit the wrong beach Sat! Way to go. PLO is a great place to be this time of year if you like to fish breakers....sooner or later on any august day you'll see a group reachable by kayak.........time to get out there.
