Mattawoman 8/12

SKUNKED!!!!!!!!!!!! First time at Mattawoman, fished from 6:30 til about 11 this morning seemed to be on a low tide, only saw a couple people catch an occasional fish. Is a high tide better at mattawoman on low??

Sorry to hear that, but at least you're not alone. Mike (chexone) said that a tournament was wrapping up when he got to the ramp on Saturday, so I suspect the water was beaten to a froth and the fish are just hiding out waiting for things to calm down.

As for high vs. low, I've had good days and bad days with both. I prefer high tide, but I think the best day I had there was on a low tide. I do think fishing on a weekend is not as productive as fishing during the week.

Sorry to hear that Harry. My son and I were headed down there this morning but never made it. We got side tracked and left late then had to turn around because my son forgot his glasses and wouldn't be able to see his rig. At that point it was light out and not worth the 45 min drive. It was one of those mornings but at least it doesn't seem like I missed much. There is always next time...

Bummer... Whenever I'm in danger of skunking out at Mattawoman, I put a worm on a small jig head and drop it in. A catfish always bites.

Yeah a bunch of bassmaster amateurs were there on Saturday morning... Scared all the fish.

On the fly, I think I talked with you briefly on the water. I was in the green camo fs10. We were chatting about the barges. Don't know if you noticed but I had two snakeheads wrapped up in the net laying on the front of my yak. The larger one was 27" and 8lbs. I didnt catch any bass though. I did notice some blue crabs clinging onto some wood around the barges. I think maybe the salinity is up and maybe the bass have moved up??? It was the first of about a dozen trips to mattawoman this year that I didnt catch any bass. It seems something is up with the bass. There was a tournament that started sunday morning As I was launching around 5:30. Talkes with some of the boaters later in the morning and they hadnt caught anything either.

That bass tournament probably didn't help! JFFoley and I fished with Capt Mike Starrett on Sunday afternoon/evening and it was definitely a tough bass bite. We missed a lot of snakeheads and other fish and finally connected with a few. 1 snakehead in the boat, 1 premature release on the rail, and a few long distance releases. Kept one for dinner and it was great! Cooked it like an old Southern MD recipe a H&L buddy gave me. Oven to 350, thin coat of mayo, dash of seasoning (I used Tony's), and then topped with Parmesan cheese (I used some Italian seasoning because I had it already)- cook till it flakes and it's pretty awesome.

Potomac Pike was the target and many where hooked and lost. Did the old LGMouth swing into the boat trick with one PP and it fell off just as he started the swing. Oh well. The LGMouth hit a few here and there, was a bonus. The last pic is uhm..

blitzing baitfish on top of the grass on a falling tide. It was unreal, never seen anything like it. Swaths of water were filled with fleeing baitfish. Caugh the snakeheads flippin swimbaits into the middle of all the action.

I would've liked to have seen that. Guess I gotta get there earlier.

Michael--Is that a knife hole, arrow hole, or bullet hole in that last pic?

My guess is a blunt object of some sort... It inhaled my frog so must have been caught on something else prior and made the escape. Or, it was just a slow learner.
